Progesterone Pessary

Hi has anyone taken these before?
I'm currently in limbo as my dates don't match my scan I had yesterday. Should be around 6-7 weeks. But scan showed a sac with a yolk sac and fetal pole and was around 4-5 weeks.
Midwife has offered me Progesterone pessaries to try and help the pregnancy. I've never had these before and just wondered if anyone had experience of it. And did they help? Thanks

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I hope all goes well.

I had two miscarriages and used the pessaries from week 4 until about week 14ish with my third pregnancy, which reached full term. They are fine just messy as they melt during the course of the day - use light sanitary towels to keep yourself comfortable. I wouldn’t have noticed them otherwise.

Hi congratulations!!!!
I had 2 previous miscarriages and was given progesterone pessaries to take until I was 16 weeks and I am currently 25!!
I agree they are a nightmare and a bit messy but definitely worth it❤️

Hi there, I was on these from the moment I had pregnancy confirmed until 16 weeks. They're bloody awful in terms of mess. Get yourself some "period pants", they are an honest godsend and far, far more pleasant than wearing pads to catch the goop! They'll do double duty, I now have them packed in my hospital bag for labour and recovery, mine were £30 for six pairs off eBay and I intentionally chose "Bridget Jones" size, they are fabulous and really comfy.

As for dates it is possible they are both correct. Occasionally a doc will use the length of the fetal development which is 2 weeks behind the usually accepted "pregnancy" weeks dated from your last period, two weeks before conception. The fetal pole is not usually visible at all at 4 weeks' pregnant, and generally seen at 6-7 weeks pregnant (4-5 weeks' fetal development), according to Doctor Google.

I’ve been put on these for similar reasons. Consultant suggested doing them rectally (it is a lot less messy!) x

Thank you everyone for the replies will give them a go. I Do love a pair of Bridget's so will dig them out too.
I'll update after the scan when I know more too.

I've also taken the pessarys but found the mess unbearable and that actually caused me thrush and could have been a worse infection.
My consultant advised using them rectally as it's a lot safer infection wise and the body absorption is better. So glad she advised that as I did switch to rectally which was so much more comfortable with no mess x

I had a scan at what should have been 8 weeks but only dated 6, also found a bleed so have been prescribed progesterone. When is your next scan?

Dinnerdate1 · 06/11/2023 19:40

@LW678 Mine is next Tuesday now I do believe. Similar to me. I'm meant to be around 6-7, but showing 4-5 fetal pole and yolk sac all seen but nothing else

Congrats. I agree with others, that using them vaginally is messy. They melt at body temperature, and leave a waxy, white mess! I too ended up using them rectally. A tiny dot of lube on the end helped. A second of it feeling uncomfortable, but then no seepage or mess at all. x

Gone for the next scan and it's measuring 7 weeks and have a heartbeat. Feel so relieved. On the pessary now until 16 weeks
