Hyperemesis

Hey, I’m currently just entered week 6 of my first pregnancy and was hospitalised with hyperemesis. Been taking cyclizine but the nausea is almost unbearable still, (I am waiting for my doctors to get in contact) just wondering if anyone else has any advice or any foods they were able to stomach. At the moment the thought of pretty much any food makes me gag, not exactly what I’d imagined when we tried to get pregnant

If you can’t eat solids then rehydration drinks with electrolytes.

A consultant obstetrician advised my friend (who also had HG) to put a little bit of a Mars bar in between their gums and cheek. The chocolate will slowly melt and you’ll get a much needed sugar boost.

Hi, I had it with both of mine and I understand what you're going through. Watermelon was a lifesaver for me with my second, I was in and out of hospital all the way through, but this really helped me. Also frozen yoghurt and sorbet helped to give me a boost. There are other medications that you can try, so if cyclizine isn't working ask your doctor to try something else. Some people say the sickness stops after the first trimester, so keep that goal in mind. Hope it eases off for you. Use the support around you as HG can really affect you mentally too. Hope you feel better soon, the reward at the end makes it all worth it!

You can ask for other medication too. Metroclopramide and cyclizine together helped me get out of bed. Hyperemesis is hard to manage and what you can stomach/smell will vary so quickly. I would stick to beige foods, don’t worry about eating healthy as baby will get what they need from your body. You just need to concentrate on hydration levels. I found cold
fizzy drinks helped, water was revolting. I’d also recommend chewing whatever you eat really well as it most likely will come up and well chewed food is easier to throw up. Sorry I know it’s tough.

You have my total sympathy- I’m currently going through the exact same thing (I’m week 8 and I’ve already been hospitalized twice).
I’m managing to sip ice cold, full sugar sprite and eat 1 or 2 haribo per hour (although I often still vomit it’s less unpleasant than most foods and better than dry wretching/bile).
Any movement or exertion makes it worse so I’ve basically been stuck in bed (not ideal with 2 older kids). It’s so tough. If you haven’t done so already then I recommend getting some urine ketone test strips and a blood pressure monitor so you can check if things are getting really bad and you need to go into hospital (I’m definitely guilty of waiting too long to seek help because I just can’t face going).

Thank you for all the replies I’m feeling way less guilty about how I’m coping and have gotten loads of hydration drinks and I’ll try everyone’s tips to hopefully find some relief

You have my sympathy it's awful. I had it right up until I had my DS. All's I could stomach was sweets and Fanta or sprite. Strangely enough I would wake up in the middle of the night craving a cheese sandwich and that would often stay down , maybe as I went straight back asleep I have no idea. I hope it passes soon and medication helps x

I know exactly how you feel, I’m currently 8+1 and struggling.
I had to go into A&E for a drip a couple weeks ago and ended up being there for 13hrs ad they were so busy. I’m contemplating going first thing tomorrow morning in the hope I will be in and out.

For me the nausea went with cyclizine but the drowsiness was too much.
i’ve now been given something else (it begins with a M) I don’t get drowsy but it takes a while for the nausea feeling to pass.

I’ve tried everything, bland pasta, plain Chinese noodles , soup, crackers, ginger sweets; everything works for a short time then I just struggle to keep it down.

please let me know if you find a work round, I’m meant to be flying from London to San Francisco is a couple of weeks but I recon I will have to cancel my trip.

Complan is good - meal in a drink. Designed for ill people.

Gets max nutrition down with minimum hassle.

I hated the banana ones and pretty much lived on the strawberry.

Also, anything you can mindlessly eat normall is easier than anything where you pay attention to the food.

How are you getting on? I’m week 13 of pregnancy no 2 and I feel like I have it under control with my meds after being hospitalised, it’s so hard. I was sick until an hour after my c section with my first. I still cried and went to bed at 8.30 last night but I feel like the actual sickness has much improved on prochloroperazine and omeprazole. Little tip - pregnancy no 1 I was on promethazine and tbh now looking back having tried it again it made me worse - but, I suffered with this constant nauseous lump in my throat that made me vomit constantly. Sometimes 20 times a day. It was Covid so I was never admitted like this time, gp lost urine samples, no face to face appointments - I mentioned this to my dr this time in hospital and was given omeprazole as she explained it was stomach acid! Honestly - the relief I can’t even tell you. I’m still nauseous and sick but I was able to eat some Christmas dinner, even pudding and wasn’t that sick. Just if you have the same symptoms as mr it was s game changer!
