Has nub theory been wrong for anyone?

Feeling very disheartened due to thinking one way/having such strong gut feel and wondering if scan photos can ever be distorted/unclear or just in general too early to tell 13 weeks? I just feel I’ve massively ruined surprise

I had two and both were wrong. Both told me I was having a boy (can't remember exact % but it was high) and I had a girl.

From Window to the Womb website:

"The ‘Nub Theory’ suggests it’s possible to tell the gender of your child in an ultrasound scan from as early as 12 weeks. It is supposedly the earliest point of prediction using modern technology; however it is only 40-60% accurate."

I've only just started looking into nub theory for a bit of fun (I'm currently pregnant with my third) but from what I've read, I'd take it with a pinch of salt this early on. There's a reason they don't offer to tell you the sex at the 12 week scan - because it's far too early to be able to tell you reliably!

Wow ok….. I was soooooo convinced. I don’t really understand how they can gather boy. Nice to know not always right!!!

I believe accuracy is higher when performed by a trained professional... but it's still early days!

Loulou34567 · 03/11/2023 00:53

Yes it is. I wish I never bothered. I’m sure it sends people crazy.

Why did you find out?

Loulou34567 · 03/11/2023 01:00

I got too curious. Why do you ask

Nub and skull theory were completely wrong about both my babies. I joked about it with the midwife and she laughed saying so many people go by it but it’s never a definite. I had a feeling with both of mine and I was right based on the feeling.

Loulou34567 · 03/11/2023 17:29

May I ask what you ended up having? Have you heard of others using these “experts”

When the nub theory said I was having a boy, it turned out to be a girl and then vice Versa the second time around.

alrighthen · 03/11/2023 18:34

It’s wrong all the time. At 12 weeks it’s over 90% certain but that’s only when trained sonographers are doing it. For the rest of us, the chances of it being wrong are pretty high!

ps I’d advise removing your name from your scan photo. We can see name and date of birth.

How do I delete posts???

@Loulou34567 I could have written this myself. I don't think mine is particularly obvious but a couple of companies have said boy. I don't really know why I submitted them because I explicitly don't want to know (third and final pregnancy) but a sonographer also called the baby a "boy" and then sworn she hadn't given it away.

I should add that on FB groups, 2 experienced "nub specialists" have said there just isn't enough to see either way.

It's now driving me mad and I'm obsessing but I really don't want to succumb now at 33 weeks and have a gender scan...

Anyflippingname · 04/11/2023 18:10

To add, I have one of each already so I don't really mind but I was convinced this one was a girl. It's just making me mad and I hate it.

noaddedsugarx · 04/11/2023 18:32

So I take it you thought it was a girl? I think your scan looks boyish due to the stacking.

Nub theory is way more accurate than 40-60%. I’d say more like 90-95% if you know what you’re looking at especially around 13 weeks. It’s more likely that a baby is incorrectly identified as a female than male using nub theory as if it’s too early it can still change/rise to a boy. But if it looks boyish there’s a very high chance it’s a boy.

I was in your position a few weeks ago. I was convinced girl until I had my 12 week scan and nub theory was an obvious boy. it took me ages to get my head around it but when it was confirmed a boy at my gender scan at 16 weeks I’d had some time to accept it and get excited.

That is a bizarre statement from Window to the Womb. A binary choice cannot have less than 50% accuracy!
