Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone is or has been in the same position as me. Im 5ft 4 and about 45kg (i know - im very skinny, always have been!), im currently 13 weeks pregnant. Just thinking about labour and wanting to know if anyone else with a low BMI has had a normal vaginal birth? or if ill have to have a c-section?

Completely normal. It wasn't a cause for concern at all, in my case.

I imagine they'd only consider a c-section if the baby was massive (but correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm around the same as you and put on 10kg during the pregnancy which is about expected for a low BMI. My body went back to my normal, natural weight very soon afterwards.

I was similar in my first pregnancy, maybe slightly bigger around 49kg, 5ft4.

I put on a LOT of weight, maybe 20kg in total and got the most horrendous pelvic problems. I lost all of it again within a year postpartum without trying, but my body really struggled for the few months it was carrying that much extra weight.

My main advice is not to overdo the activity. I hurt myself by carrying on going to the gym, lifting small weights etc. My body had never carried so much weight before and all my muscles and joints struggled. Take it easy and slowly especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.

I did have a terrible birth ending in EMCS but that had nothing to do with my weight. If you end up having a c section it won't be because of your weight - but if it does happen that you need a CS, it's not a disaster, I'm opting for one with my second.

I was 6st 10 when I got pregnant with twins. Put on a huge amount of weight (about 50% of my original body weight). Had a normal vaginal delivery.

@Mummy08m Bless you, thanks so much for the advice, ill definitely avoid overdoing the activity. Fingers crossed you have a more positive birth experience with your second child!

Oh yes, I got pelvic problems too but probably because it was a twin pregnancy...

@LightSpeeds If you dont mind me asking, did you sustain any tears during birth? xx

I can't remember with that birth. I didn't need any stitches so probably not and the babies were pretty small (just under 4 and 5 lbs).

I did with my first child (I was probably about 7st when I got pregnant).

I had a vaginal birth without any problems. I weighed 45kg and I am 5ft 2. This time I was consultant led due to low bmi but after seeing her once, she said she's not worried and I am just a small person! So plan is to give birth at Midwife Led Unit again :-) Good luck op hope it goes well x

I was 7 stone 2 and 5 foot tall. All babies (3) ranged from 7lb7 to 8lb. Normal births 2 hours in total each one. Tore first time only. No other issues.
