Preeclampsia early induction or Csection?

Hey,

So I'm 36 weeks pregnant today and at 35+4 I was told I have preeclampsia and the last few days have been such a whirlwind of news and information and scary topics!

My community midwife picked up my high BP and protein in my urine, I was originally told it wasn't horrible and I could go home on Labetalol the next day I came back for further monitoring to be told I needed to be admitted which really upset me, she said if my blood pressure was stable I could go home today but so far no luck it's been so jumpy and I'm on 300mg of Labetalol 4 times a day and I'm on nifedipine twice a day and also a blood thinning injection once a day. I'm gutted as I really want to go home.

My BP is all over the place so far nothing has stabilised it, I think the only solution would be to have the baby which they said we would start induction process on Friday/Saturday next week, but I'm worried about my BP, being in hospital is stressing me out and the thought of potentially having a long 24-48+ induced labour stresses me out and I feel like could end in an emergency c section anyways, would it make sense for me to just request a C-section to save myself the hassle of the potential failed induction? I'm already really scared and anxious especially as my partner can't be with me all the time and medical settings make me nervous, should I skip the faff and request a C-section?

Any thoughts/opinions are really appreciated ☺️

Having had pre-eclampsia, a failed induction and a traumatic emergency c-section. I’d opt for the c-section if I were in your shoes my induction just wasted time we didn’t have.

All the best.

@OnMyJourney sounds like my local hospital!!

Have they talked about a CS at all?

5lbs 3ozs is a very good size. They can measure her lung function if they're worried about needing oxygen if she were to be delivered now. But at almost 37 weeks she should be fine.

Hopefully things are well underway for you now. Wishing you all the best for you, your partner, and your little girl. ❤

@Dyra Thank you for your well wishes we are all going good ❤️ we were due to start induction at 1pm but they were super busy and asked us not to come in until 3pm which is a bit annoying but I understand. We are in the process of induction, they've inserted a pessary and it's the weirdest thing in the world, I had it inserted at about 5pm and by about 7pm I started feeling cramps, nothing really dramatic but like PMS cramps type pain, I'm hoping this is a good thing, the doctor told us preeclampsia inductions tend to go quicker so fingers crossed that she's right 🤞she also said my cervix was quite far forward but still long and closed so not sure what all that means but I'm holding hope baby will be here by Monday 🥰

In my experience, induction works best when your body is ready and about to go into labour anyway so tbh I’m not sure Id bother going through it so early. Or if you do, give yourself a limit. You don’t need to make yourself suffer for days before asking for a c section. It’s such a personal thing though and if you do try with induction then you are giving yourself the chance to have a vaginal birth, if that’s something you want to experience.

Oops just seen you went for it. Good luck!

Good luck OP, my consultant told me the same that ladies with preeclampsia tend to respond well to induction. Hope it goes well for you

katem98 · 04/11/2023 22:16

FWIW my sister also had pre-eclampsia and her labour with induction was super short. I'm talking like just over an hour! Good luck OP.

Dyra · 05/11/2023 03:41

Glad things have started! I was told the same, and I guess once labour was properly underway (with the drip) it happened relatively quickly. Everything crossed for you baby is here soon.

Crazy weekend!

So I went for the induction in the end, I had the pessary inserted at 5ish PM on Saturday, on Sunday eve at 5pm they took out the 24 hour pessary but I was already in a lot of pain, midwife examined me to be 1cm dilated, she gave me a gel at 2mg which caused me extremely painful cramping alllll night, I had very pain mimed they could give me on the antenatal ward, at 11pm I was then examined, not dilated past 1cm but apparently I was stretchy enough to break my waters, and I was in excruciating pain all night, finally doctor came snd spoke to me and said he wanted to examine me and maybe wait another 4-6 hours which I was like nooo take me and pop my waters, so at 6am we went to the labour ward, midwife told me to go for a wee, as I walked out of the bathroom my waters broke all over my legs and down on the floor! Weirdest feeling! I then got an epidural put in because lol no thank you, I waited 40 minutes for my bloods to come back to give me the okay to have the epidural, bloods were all okay but by the time we installed the epidural I was 9cm and didn't know it haha, epidural failed and never worked which is sad but I managed to push her out on gas and air! Beautiful 5lbs 2oz baby girl born at 13:51! We are so in love with her! Moral of this story if anyone is reading this thread wondering if you should do Csection or induction, my induction reallly wasn't too bad!

@OnMyJourney Huge congratulations welcome to the world your baby girl ☺️

NameChange30 · 06/11/2023 21:47

Congratulations! I mean, excruciating pain all night doesn't sound too great to me, but if there were no complications and baby was born safely without any risk or injury to either of you that is excellent! Enjoy your squishy newborn 🥰

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 06/11/2023 21:55

Congratulations, that is wonderful, just give yourself time to recover though because pre eclampsia is really horrible and the after effects overlooked. Keep checking your blood pressure. I have hypertension now years later from pre eclampsia.

Dyra · 07/11/2023 16:27

Yay! 🥳

Congratulations on your baby girl! So glad your induction worked. Sounds incredibly rapid once your waters went, and to not need the drip (assuming not anyway). Sorry that the epidural didn't work, and bravo for managing all night with that pain. Hopefully you're home already, or will be very soon.

OnMyJourney · 10/11/2023 21:00

Thank you everyone we're over the moon with our little girl, just still adjusting to life with a newborn 🥰 It definitely wasn't a fun labour but in a way I'm glad the epidural failed, I feel like it did make things easier after the birth but yeah pretty much my waters broke on their own and from there I was in full on labour waiting to push her out, it felt like time was going really quick but between my waters going and giving birth was actually nearly 8 hours! So crazy how time flies when you're in pain and high on gas n air 😂
