Hi everyone! I found out I was pregnant a couple of days ago (first time pregnancy) and I’m already so confused on what foods and drinks I can/can’t eat!!

does anyone have any advice on how to navigate this going forward as I feel I’m worrying/googling every time I eat something!

thank you in advance!!

Just go on nhs as it lists explicitly

Sealover123 · 28/10/2023 18:02

I know how you feel, Googling anything freaks me out! Just stick with NHS guidelines and try not to overthink it like I was doing! 🙈😆

Newlyttc · 28/10/2023 22:50

@Sealover123 It’s so hard isn’t it 🙈 even as simple as, I love a cup of tea but I’m reading conflicting info saying even decaf tea isn’t safe! So tried to switch to hot chocolate as my “hot drink” and now that might have caffeine in too !!?
what did they do years ago without Google 😂😂

I’m 10 weeks and veggie so most of the nhs list doesn’t apply. I wish I could have kept up my usual diet but I am so repulsed by veggies at the moment it’s unreal. Just the sight of a tomato makes me want to throw up. I can tolerate bananas, but otherwise it’s just yoghurts and chips. Managed a spoonful of peas earlier 🤢

Plumful · 28/10/2023 22:56

Just follow NHS guidance, it’s not confusing.

neleh87 · 28/10/2023 22:57

You can have decaf tea! And hot chocolate! Hot chocolate was my go to when I was pregnant. Some caffeine is fine. There is hardly any in decaf tea or hot chocolate.

HiCandles · 28/10/2023 22:57

NHS list is the one to follow. Other countries have varying rules, don't get yourself worried and confused by randomly googling.

ThanksItHasPockets · 28/10/2023 23:49

Don’t Google. Stick to the NHS guidance linked above. It is simple and evidence-informed.

NHS guidance says you can have 200mg caffeine a day. A cup of tea has 75mg, so you can happily have two and have 50mg caffeine left over for can of Diet Coke or a chocolate bar. Easy.

NewYorkCheesecakeASAP · 29/10/2023 09:49

you can definitely have 1 to 2 cups of tea each day. No need to go decaf at all. Especially if you like your tea pre-pregnancy, there is no need to suffer without it for 9 months!

BuffaloCauliflower · 29/10/2023 09:51

Just follow the NHS guidance, there’s very little you can’t have.
The most recent research on caffeine in pregnancy says up to 300mg of caffeine a day is fine, which is quite a few teas, so you’re fine

FoleyHuck · 29/10/2023 09:57

Congratulations OP! I'm also pregnant with our first. Along with the NHS guidelines I'd strongly recommend reading 'Expecting Better' by Emily Oster and relaxing a little!

To answer your question about what they did years ago before Google, most of them produced perfectly healthy babies, just like millions of Women in other cultures without the same advice as we have in the West do now Smile

Another vote for following the NHS guidance and stepping away from Google. You have to bear in mind that a lot of online advice will be US-based, and they have such appalling food standards that the rate of food poisoning there is literally 10x what it is in the UK, so naturally the advice for pregnant women in the States is very different and often not relevant here.
