Anterior AND posterior placenta?!

I had my 20 week scan today and was told my placenta is both anterior and posterior, covering most of the uterus though not over the cervix so the sonographer wasn't concerned but she said it was very unusual as it was just one long continuous placenta. So now I'm quite worried but can't find anything online! Has anyone had any experience of this?!

If the sonographer wasn’t concerned then why are you worried? They would have said if it was a problem

@PickledScrump I think just because I haven't heard of it before and the sonographer said it was very unusual and she's never seen anything like it. I had retained placenta with my first which was a traumatic experience and it just feels a bit worrying to have a very strange and unusual placenta so wanted to know if anyone else has had similar. I'll speak to my midwife about it at my next appointment but that's over a month away.

I also have this I found out today! Did you find much out about it? During your pregnancy

I have an accessory lobe placenta that covers anterior and posterior. It was picked up during my gender scan, so I’m waiting to see what they say at my 20 week scan in a couple of weeks

gentlemum · 09/07/2024 01:28

@Lozeve it turned out to be no problem at all! I think the sonographer was a bit dramatic as I had several extra growth scans (nothing related to the placenta) and no one else thought it was strange. Basically the placenta was on my right side so it was usual size but where it was positioned was from the front right of my stomach and then round the right side of my body towards my back. It was totally normal and caused no issues at all. So don't worry about yours!

That's so reassuring @gentlemum thank you for updating!

I had a retained double lobed anterior placenta with my first and now my third it's double lobed again and is both anterior and posterior (and apparently very large). My biggest fear is the placenta being retained again.

This is exactly the same as me!
I know someone that had a retained placenta and had to have it manually removed and then had a severe pp haemorrhage, it’s made me really nervous!
This is my third baby and am feeling quite anxious after 2 relatively easy and complication free births.
I’m sorry to hear you had a traumatic first birth. Having the double lobe again has it made you want a different birth plan this time?

No, I won't plan anything differently. If it happens again I will insist that we go straight to removal in theatre with adequate anaesthetic rather than removing in the delivery room. I was lucky that I didn't have a haemorrhage. With DS2 (a late miscarriage) my placenta was retained for over 12 hours after delivering him and I didn't bleed at all..

Good luck to you as well! I am due end of October and will try and remember to update on all the double lobe placenta threads I have posted on 😅
