Is this stupid at 37 weeks? (advice needed from those who've been there!)

I'm meant to be going on a week away in mid august, which will involve staying in a caravan. Is this a stupid idea at 37/38 weeks?! I have no idea how you generally feel at that stage - would it be manageable if I just took it easy and didn't venture far beyond the caravan?! Oh has to go anyway, as he's a youth worker and it's part of his job, so part of me thinks it's better to be where he is, rather than be on my own if something does start happening!
Any thoughts appreciated! x

You'll be fine. You will be able to do most things you do now, it just takes a bit longer!

merryberry · 09/03/2008 18:25

for me would be borderline, would miss comforts of home a lot at that stage. but main thing to worry about is weather, if its very hot, can you keep cool enough? is there somewhere darker and fresher you can go put up your feet in in the heat of the day? maybe i'm a wimp though. i speak as someone who had a july baby (oh god the swelling, the inability to cool down) and whose second is due now, on purpose to avoid hot weather!

mind you, if tried a caravan holiday in mid-august, that would guarantee me rain

What would put me off is the thought of the tiny tiny loos in caravans. I can just imagine not having enough room with a huge bump =)

That said, I'm not keen on caravans in the best of circumstances and I've turned down offer of caravaning holiday this year because I'll be about 37 weeks pregnant.

ChasingSquirrels · 09/03/2008 19:59

I gave birth at 37+0 and 36+6.
I would probably have gone the first time, but wasn't going anywhere after 36wks the 2nd time.

neolara · 09/03/2008 20:15

I gave birth at 37+3 and 37+0. Like ChasingSquirrels, I wouldn't have gone anywhere from 36 weeks, just in case.

If you have everything organised before you go, then it could be a good opportunity to have 'time out' away from day to day things, and relax before you have your baby. I would find out about the local hospital / midwifery unit first though, and obviously take pregnancy notes! Also would consider how far away from your home it is. Would you want to do the return journey with a newborn?!

whomovedmychocolate · 09/03/2008 20:17

As long as there is access to hospitals I'd go personally. There is nothing worse than sitting at home feeling fat and miserable in the last few weeks of pregnancy and wishing you had something to fill the days.

But you will be knackered and just about up to having a fan blowing on you while you read trashy paperbacks with your feet up.

pinata · 09/03/2008 21:25

see how you feel nearer the time. i thought late pregnancy = immobility, but in fact this wasn't the case at all. at 40 weeks i was still perfectly able to do everything. just a bit more sloooowly...

I'd say no reason not to go, but do think of it as a very real possibility that you might have the baby that week - so take your notes (obviously!), and your hospital bag, and make sure you have the number of the nearest hospital and know how to get there.

charlotte121 · 10/03/2008 13:11

Just to warn u the beds in caravans can be really uncomfortable so u may find urself losing out on sleep. I stay in a caravan when i was quite heavely pregnant and didnt get much sleep at all.

depends how outdoors you are. I went camping at 34 weeks with second child, did sleep on 2 carry mats (hubby had none!!)

a friend of mine was camping at 37 weeks in the lake district, got up at 3am to go to the toilet and her waters went as she stood up!!!! managed to get back to Yorkshire before labour kicked in!!

should be fine, an adventure, and prob more comfy than camping at that stage.

chocbiscuits · 11/03/2008 01:58

I went to 42 weeks and it was 2005, 30oC. I could do most things although bending was a chore, also had puffy feet and was quite grumpy!!!

bexnboo · 11/03/2008 02:24

My midwife kept telling me i'd have my baby at 42 weeks without a doubt so i decided not to give up work or anything until i was 37 weeks.... I was shocked to discover that on a check up at my hospital (thank goodness i was there) i was actually 3cm dilated... I was almost 36 weeks and lived a while from my hospital so i was glad i was there because just 3 hours later she was with us! I was shocked to say the least! My advice to all is stay near home or if you do go anywhere check out where the hospital is! If i had to do it all again, I'd put my feet up from 34 weeks as you REALLY need to rest before the baby comes! I wish i had!

debinaustria · 11/03/2008 06:29

I would second that about the tiny loos in a caravan, I wouldn't fancy it myself but it's up to you.

We're going away when I'm 36 weeks, but I'm only going to travel an hour or so from home and stay at a hotel with comfy beds and swimming pool!!
