Smell aversion

I’m 7 weeks today and I have terrible smell aversion. To the point I have had to change my living situation as being too close to the kitchen makes me boke. Any tips on how to over come this?

I had that with the smell of onion this pregnancy! Turns out onion is cooked into pretty much everything. Omg the smell when walking into my work canteen was overwhelming.

I never found a way round it, I was just miserable for the first 4m of the pregnancy. There are morning sickness sweets that I liked by myrtle and maude, but it just briefly masked it and obvs not for mealtimes

Redheadx · 24/10/2023 20:52

@Mummy08m thank you! I didn’t think there was anything but I was hopeful! It’s so bad isn’t it.. worse than I ever thought but will be worth it <3 xxx

Just sympathy. Everything made me gag until well into my second trimester. Just avoid smells as much as you can, and make sure your partner keeps the fridge clean and empties the kitchen bin frequently.

Barleysugar86 · 24/10/2023 20:56

Ahh this is easy to fix- you just need to find an acceptable smell to you and keep it near you.

For me it was a christmassy cranberry hand wash. It was soothing. When any others smells made me feel yuck I'd smell my hands and block it out.

Might be trickier if the smells are really lingering though. I just needed to get through a twenty minute train ride.

Mine is air fresheners or laundry product smells 🤢🤢🤢🤢 I walked down that aisle is Asda and almost puked there and then.

Redheadx · 24/10/2023 20:58

@Barleysugar86 ahhh what a good tip! I never thought of that… it’s mostly cooking smells that are killing me and sadly our new house is being built so living with the in-laws or I would just not cook but it’s a good idea to try this so thank you! Did this calm down for you in your second trimester?

Even the smell of a perfectly clean fridge gave me the absolute boak.

And forget looking down a plug hole!

Nothing to do but wait it out, I'm afraid.

Redheadx · 24/10/2023 21:00

@WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning ha the stories do make me laugh but when your living through it it feels like the worst thing in the world.

did it calm down for you in the 2nd trimester?

With my first, yes.

With my second....nope, sorry!

Redheadx · 24/10/2023 21:02

@WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning oh dear! Here’s hoping!

Omg, I could not stand the smell of my kitchen when pregnant with my second. It also made me realise how 'lingering' the smell of food is. It was awful. Sending sympathy.

WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning · 24/10/2023 21:04

Good luck @Redheadx 😁

Barleysugar86 · 24/10/2023 21:07

My smell sensitivity went on to about 20 weeks. (Sorry to not be the bearer of good news!). But it did lessen a bit from 12 weeks on.

MintJulia · 24/10/2023 21:08

My eldest sis couldn't bear any cooking smells while pregnant, and as she progressed she swore she could smell things that none of us could detect.

She ate most of her meals for the last 5 months, sitting outside at a picnic table.

As soon as she gave birth, it went away.

derryrose1980 · 24/10/2023 21:10

You have my full sympathy. Actually found out I was pregnant with my second as I started retching when my mil took a cooked chicken out of the oven. Hadn't even missed my period! I learned to never open the fridge door for 9 months!

Lumpyandlimpy · 24/10/2023 21:14

Oh, this was awful. It was garlic and onion for me, among many, many others. I really feel for you. I was like this most of the pregnancy but definitely not as bad as the first trimester.

Oh my gosh, that is really extreme, poor her!

@Redheadx
I recommend ginger tea or ginger capsules.
I has similar cooking smells aversions when I was 6-10 weeks.

froufroulala · 24/10/2023 21:47

Any perfume smell and my partner would send me racing to the loo! And no he wasn't smelly.
