Waiting for waters to be broken … no beds at the inn !

I had the gel inserted yesterday at 3pm to soften my cervix, another at 9pm and this morning I was 2cm dilated. They’re ready to break my waters but there aren’t any beds available. They can’t provide a timeframe either. Since then I’ve had irregular contractions and a bit of spotting. Does anyone have any similar induction stories? Or advice on how to keep sane when trying to relax on an induction ward? I’m running on 4 hrs sleep and feeling pretty deflated 🥲

I'm sorry you're having such a miserable time. You must be exhausted. Unfortunately other people's progress doesn't go to plan. I was induced but only spent 12 hours on the induction ward. Early evening I was told out of the 4 women on the ward I was last on the list as I wasn't anywhere near progressing. Unfortunately I ended up being sent to a private room not long after she said that as my blood pressure went mad. I was being induced for pre eclampsia and everything went a bit pear shaped. I ended up with emergency section the nest day. So within a matter of half an hour I jumped from last to first place.

I work on labour ward. Please don't pretend you have reduced movements. This could delay a true emergency section. If you want an elective go on the list and wait for a slot but please don't pretend you have reduced movements. There are only so many theatres, so many theatre staff, anaesthetists midwives doctors etc. if you pretend you're having an emergency you are taking that theatre time from a real emergency

DippyBunBun · 23/10/2023 22:57

I have had 2 inductions.. first in 2017 recommended by the consultant for reduced movements they had me come back later that day.. was given the gel not much happened until the next morning when my waters broke.. they left me for over 24 hours with no contractions etc only when i wiped and realised baby had poo'd inside me did they take me up onto the ward.. was in for a total of 3/4 days before giving birth.. second induction (2021) was an elected induction (fear of going into labour and being in pain at home) was given the gel.. didn't have much movement and said I needed my waters to be broken i waited 24 hours for a bed.. they had been busy and i was worried i would be in labour for as long as i was with my first but after having waters broken around midday and then an epidural and the drip i had given birth by 6pm with 10 minutes of pushing and no intervention.. Hoping you get a bed soon and hopefully before having to have a C Section.. although can see how fed up you would be!

DippyBunBun · 23/10/2023 22:58

Definitely recommend some good ear plugs!

friedgoldeggs · 23/10/2023 22:58

Bless you OP, what an awful situation. With DS my section kept getting pushed back due to staffing levels and emergencies and it was miserable, fasting was a nightmare as I'd fast all day then they'd come and tell me my section was being pushed back yet again (and I didn't have diabetes to contend with)! Hope your little one is here safe and sound soon! The waiting really is so hard but you're doing great Star

Dyra · 24/10/2023 00:05

I really feel for you OP.

I was in a similar situation last year. I had pre-eclampsia, but baby was healthy and well grown, and I was otherwise symptomless. Induction was started on the Monday, but then wasn't even checked to see if the gel had done anything until 24 hours later Tuesday. It had, so that was that until a bed opened up for an ARM.

I work on the delivery suite itself, so got my colleagues to tell me my position on the list. On the Tuesday I was 8th. By the evening I had risen to 4th. Wednesday morning I'd slipped to 10th. Apparently they were being inundated with woman in labour or had had waters broken. Luckily, I sleep ok in hospitals despite 4 hourly BP checks, and had plenty of entertainment. However, one of my bay mates was extremely displeased about the whole situation. They could not believe how long it was taking. How they'd been in hospital forever (little realising I'd already had a week's stay prior to their admission...). Fortunately she wasn't awake when I was sent down at 7AM Friday morning. Baby was born not long after 2AM in the Saturday.

I was never open to having a C-section (though wound up with one anyway). But we're definitely seeing a great many more Cat 3 C-section lately from women who are done waiting for induction. And tbh I can't blame them.

Hopefully a bed becomes free for you soon, or a spot becomes free in theatre.

PeachyGreen95 · 24/10/2023 07:24

@HammerToFall no definitely not. I wouldn’t test fate like that 😬😬

@Dyra ah you were in the exact same position as I am! I didn’t realise it happened so often hence my original post! I wish I could sleep in hospitals I may be in a better frame of mind if I could get a few hours. Doctors are heading back around at 8am so fingers crossed for a (positive) update. I have my gown ready to run out of here 😛 they said October / November are always the busiest months but they’ve never seen anything like the last couple of days. The other lady booked in for a cat 3 on this ward ended up giving birth in the birthing suite - no labour ward beds. I’m absolutely riddled with anxiety 😩😩 I don’t think I could physically or mentally give birth without an epidural or some hard pain relief!!!!!

@PeachyGreen95 which hospital as it in curiosity?
Everything you have said resonates with my experience. Going in on Saturday and not managing to get a bed until Friday. I spent most of Thursday crying not that it made a difference, loads of ladies in the same position were it was awful.
This was nov21. I was all ready to ask for a c section and was pushed out of it by docs/midwifes.
I walked 5k round the hospital on Wednesday not that it did anything!
Unfortunately when I did deliver it was very fast and ended up with a big tear and will have to have a section next time around anyway.
Currently 9 weeks and will be having a section.
Maternity units are in such a mess and continue to let women down and often give them false hope, ie admitting women when there are not enough beds.
best of luck to you and hopefully it happens soon for you 🙏 x

@JollyHostess101 so true. I’m being induced because I have gestational diabetes which was discovered fairly late into the pregnancy, baby is measuring big and quite small so they pushed towards getting her out early. Now I’m here I wonder why, I’ve put so much stress and anxiety on myself over the last 48 hours it has probably done worse than waiting at home and going full term when the baby is ready. I had heard some horror stories about induction but decided to ignore them and go for it. I don’t think I’d ever put myself through this again 😟

Same with me GD then she stopped growing as well!!

once it all kicked off I couldn’t fault the staff at all but the final night I was begging to go home no one told me we couldn’t leave once it started!!

we had a pub that backed onto the hospital carpark so we did escape for dinner one evening under the guise of “going for a walk” 😂

I hope you have good news soon

Gloopyhoop · 24/10/2023 10:04

Really hope you get in today @PeachyGreen95 ! I've called my hospital for an update on where I am on the list and they said I've moved up 2 spaces but for all I know I could've gone back first. So still no closer to knowing when I'll be sent in 😞 I've just had enough now, 4 days and counting.

rainbowstardrops · 24/10/2023 10:07

What have the doctors said this morning @PeachyGreen95?
Hopefully things have finally got moving!

1992H · 24/10/2023 10:08

Oh I feel for you! Hope you get a timeframe and those cuddles soon 😍

Olika · 24/10/2023 14:15

I am hoping no update since morning means you have given birth 🤞🏼🙂

Congratulations OP, delighted it's all over for you now, well done getting though the last few days😘

tunapokebowl · 24/10/2023 15:14

Congratulations OP! Hope you have a good recovery.

Don't believe the horror stories about c section recovery, lots of people are back on their feet (albeit slowly) after a few days. I was back running 6 weeks post emergency c section, hope your recovery will be similar.

1992H · 24/10/2023 15:32

Ahh congratulations ❤️❤️

rainbowstardrops · 24/10/2023 16:18
