i suspect the answer is "pretty much nothing" though

cupsoftea · 09/03/2008 08:47

minimum for me & it's what I have - nappies & wipes, sudocream, changing mat on the floor, babysling, car seat, plastic box for a bath, babygros, vests, cardi's & socks, snowsuit

needmorecoffee · 09/03/2008 08:55

nappies, cotton wool and water for the bottoms. Some clothes. Norks.
You don't actually need a changing mat. Use a towel. Or a car seat (we didn't have a car) or a bath - babies don't get dirty till they are about one then you can chuck 'em in the big bath.
So thats a minimum. Its 'nice' to have a bath though, I did for 1-3 but not 4.
Charity shops will have all the clothes a small baby would ever need.
Sling is nice too as it leaves your hands free.
So there's minimum followed by nice

you don't need a baby bath or a changing mat...

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 13:12

I know parents who don't have prams, they just use a sling.

Plenty of parents don't have cots if they co-sleep.

Towel instead of changing mat.

Pieces of cloth instead of baby wipes (which smell gross).

Car seat is a necessity unless of course you don't have car

RustyBear · 09/03/2008 13:14

Depends which baby it is. With my PFB I had a massive changing bag with built in mat stuffed with every conceivable thing I might ever need.

With DD, I'd stuff a nappy & some baby wipes in an old carrier bag in my handbag...

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 13:22

In fact you might not need that many nappies if you decide to do 'elimination communication'

Fillyjonk · 09/03/2008 13:40

ah but you don't need nappy wipes

toilet paper + water is fine...

bluenosesaint · 09/03/2008 13:49

My bare minimum would be:

Clothes, not too many and stick to babygro's
Vests, again not too many
Cardy, coat and hat.
Sling.
Car seat if you have a car.
Nappies.
Cotton wool.
Boobs

Don't need a baby bath, a bowl to clean his little face and bottom will do at first, then he can go straight into the big bath.
Don't need a moses basket/crib/cot if you're planning to co-sleep, although obviously you will need a cot if you don't want to co-sleep.
Don't need a pram as a sling will do the job just as well.

Good luck

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 13:52

yes but washable wipes are far more environmentally friendy and economical FJ, and I find toilet paper disintegrates.

(It's belgo btw)

LifeIsHell · 09/03/2008 14:11

My list would be
6 vests, 6 babygros
1 fleecy babygro (instead of snow suit)
1 Baby Bjorn carrier (dont get on with slings)
1 pram (using Baby Bjorn wears out my back)
1 bouncy chair
1 car seat (even if you dont have a car, you end up getting lifts from friends, in taxis)
2-3 pairs sox, scratch mitts & hats
cotton wool, nappies, sudocreme or similar in 1st weeks
Feeding equipment (just breasts,really)
muslins or old towels

I have a 3 wk old right now, so feel quite atuned on this subject!

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 14:13

Muslim squares are good as bibs and changing mats. I tended to keep one in my bag.

Agree about changing bags and PFBs Rusty Bear!

Minkus · 09/03/2008 14:55

Not sure squares of Muslim folk is to be encouraged MegaMindy

Duvetheaven, I think how "essential" an item is depends on how far the concept of modern "convenience" appeals. Like the baby wipes already mentioned- yes it's blimmin handy having them but whether or not they are essential is dependent on whether you're happy to keep up with the laundry the alternative reusable ones create. And changing mats- yes of course a towel works well but occasionally your baby will do a monster wee/poo all over it and it will need some serious cleaning (as well as the surrounding area I expect). If you are ok with this then the chging mat looks a bit frivolous!

FWIW I agree that babies need a lot less stuff than shops would have us believe, and so my list for a newborn would be:

Boobs
10 or so changes of clothes (sleepuits and vests as already mentioned)
1 set of outdoor clothes (coat/all in one, hat and mittens)
Nappies of your choice
Cotton wool
Sling
Car seat if you have a car

The other stuff you probably already have at home- small bowl for washing, couple of blankets.

Thats my list of basics- I would probably have a lot more stuff as despite everything I've said I'm a lazy old bint really and love baby wipes/changing mats/convenient solutions

Good luck!

sweetkitty · 09/03/2008 15:22

I'm just pulling my list of things together for number 3. I have a lot already so am buying the bare minimum.

nappies/wipes
6 vests
6 sleepsuits
few little outfits (have already) but remember you will get loads of presents wait and see what you get first
something to sleep on - I will have moses basket for downstairs and bedside cot for upstairs (love bedside cot like cosleeping but baby has it's own little bed)
sling
pram (not essential though)
changing mat
bath seat for big bath
car seat
swing (have already cheap bouncer would do)

needmorecoffee · 09/03/2008 15:25

The super expensive changing bags are a real rip off. I did one for for PFB but with numbers 2-4 a nappy in the back of the buggy sufficed.

MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 15:51
Blush
MegaMindy · 09/03/2008 15:52

my super expensive changing bag was too small for the shopping and the sip broke. Just have a normal ruck sack now.

sorkycake · 09/03/2008 15:57

car seat if you drive
sling
clothes (mainly sleepsuits)
washable nappies (if you go that route)
couple of blankets maybe
breasts with milk in 'em
muslin cloths (good as blankies, snot clothes, cut up for wipes, bibs, makeshift hats, nappies if desperate - allsorts really)
I bathe with the baby in the big bath

Fillyjonk · 09/03/2008 17:45

lol I know belgo

we get those cloths from ikea that are about £1 for 300

MrsBadger · 09/03/2008 18:15

and not essential but damn handy is something to dangle over them to amuse them

can range from an all-singing all-dancing baby gym you can use later to a bit of string between two chairs with hairbands, ribbons, plastic measuring spoons etc hung on

nappyaddict · 06/04/2008 12:12

is this it?
