Sterilisers/sterilising

FTM here. Not sure on what steriliser to get. My friend recommends the nuby UV one and it does seem great- very quick. Was wondering if anyone had used one before and how it compares to microwave/steam sterilising. I have been gifted £100 to buy one so not bothered on expense so long as it’s around that mark.

Also call me naive but when do you sterilise? Once a bottle is used, do you wash it then sterilise it then put it in the cupboard? Or do you wash the used bottles, store in cupboard then sterilise when needing to use them? I.e sterilise 2/3 bottles in morning then again in afternoon??

don’t laugh I’m new to this 🙈

Milton bucket for me

Wash, chuck in, after 15 minutes good to go and take out as needed!
Change the solution every 24 hours

Stressedoutforever · 18/10/2023 19:58

I keep the dirty ones in the sink until I'm ready to wash and sterilise too

riotlady · 18/10/2023 19:58

Another vote for Milton here, it’s so easy. Just leave them in there until you need them

Personally I find the cold water Milton tank the most convenient (a few by far cheapest!) as with a uv/ steam steriliser you would wash all you bottles, dummies pump parts etc, run the sterilising cycle then as soon as you open it nothing will stay sterile, so you have to remove everything, assemble the bottles and sore the dummies/pump parts in a sterile container- very annoying if you have a crying baby as just want to grab one dummy! Whereas with the Milton cold tank you fill it with solution, wash up everything and throw it all in, and it stays in there til you need to grab something, just grab what you need, no need to rinse and leave the rest til you need it, change the solution once a day! Hope this helps/ then save your voucher for something else

Microwave 100%. So easy. We have tommee tippee which I think holds 6 bottles. So wash them well in hot soapy water and rinse. Then pop in microwave and they are fine in the steriliser for 24 hours. Milton is a right faff personally, absolutely stinks too

JoyApple · 19/10/2023 00:28

I don't like the microwave one.

I've bought a second hand tommee tippee electric one which seems quite straightforward and quick although a bit watery. I also got a second hand tommee tippee UV one for about £15. But I'm concerned that it's quite a long cycle and will take too long ...

I was considering the cold water method but I'm concerned it might smell chemically?

Personally I wouldn't invest in a UV one brand new unless it was much quicker.

I’ve just had my 3rd dc and I’ve always used a Milton cold water set up. It’s so easy and no faff. Wash bottles in hot soapy water, chuck them in and forget until they’re needed.

SweetPeaPods · 19/10/2023 05:08

I like the mam bottles as you can sterilise them in the microwave individually without a steriliser.
I also have Ardo microwave bags that are great for bits of breast pump etc.
with dc1 who was exclusively bottle feb I found cold water Milton easiest.

@JoyApple if you google the nuby uv steriliser it only takes 3 minutes and is what my friend has x

Cold water milton. UV can discolour bottles which is annoying. (I use silicone bottles but plastic can turn yellow due to the UV)
I thought I'd go UV this time round but ended up going back to Milton

jadey1991 · 19/10/2023 06:05

Tommee tippee, steam sterliser l( not microwave one)

OopsieeDaisy · 19/10/2023 08:32

Another vote for Milton cold water steriliser, so easy and also perfect to take if you go away too. There’s so much you need for a new baby you could then always put the rest of the money you’ve been gifted towards something else.

Ooh this looks very promising ... Although does it really only take 2 bottles at a time? But still 3 min is a winner and it comes out dry. It's much better than the tommee tippee one, which full cycle takes over an hour. Madness.

MaggieFS · 19/10/2023 09:32

We started off with Milton but I kept getting splashes on clothes which bleached them!

Switched to the Tommee Tippee microwave one and it was great. I just ran it each time I had four washed up bottles ready to go.

prayforthecottransfer · 19/10/2023 09:37

I used a microwave one first time and this time I have the tommee Tippee UV that I sterilise breast pump parts and teethers in. Absolutely love the thing.

Coffeerum · 19/10/2023 13:13

I would probably do those microwave steam ones if you are bottle feeding.
I used the microwave sterilising bags as I was combi feeding so only needed to do about 1 bottle a day.
I tried the cold water tablets but DC wouldn't drink from the bottle! To be fair they have a faint taste of the tablets so can't blame them.

Whentwobecomesthree · 19/10/2023 13:17

I don't think you can use the Nuby for breast pump parts. So if you will need to sterilise those and don't want to use two different methods maybe avoid.

Have also faffed around with steam and uv. Milton solution is the easiest in my opinion
