Maternity Pads instead of disposable underwear

Hi all

Just wondering as I tried to have a look for small size at Tesco's today however all the disposable underwear sizes are M or L. Tried to check online but again couldn't find in a small size. Will I be ok using just maternity pads and big knickers? What did you do?

I found maternity pads fine. Never needed disposable pants, but big, black cotton knickers are your friends.

YouveGotAFastCar · 17/10/2023 19:59

I never used disposable underwear. Just maternity pads in comfortable pants.

AwkwardPaws27 · 17/10/2023 20:02

I didn't use any disposables underwear, just pads and big cotton knickers (got a couple of packs from M&S which I wore throughout third trimester & a couple of months postpartum).
I preferred the big thick pads - the boots organic cotton ones were great, sainsburys own were a close second. I tried some thinner ones, but the top layer snagged on my stitches and I appreciated the extra padding for the first week or so.

I used Tena pants with a pad in the first couple of days then just pads. Tbh I was glad of the padding!

I found knickers with pads so insanely uncomfortable, I'm usually a size 6 so small pants and the pads were big and shifted, got stuck to my leg, I leaked etc really quickly switched to buying Defend Comfort Protect size s/m small enough for me and much comfier. Can get them from Amazon / local pharmacy. Found them less plasticy than tena

RedHelenB · 17/10/2023 20:13

Get disposable pants, so much easier.

WeightoftheWorld · 17/10/2023 20:15

I did use disposable undies, just a pack each time for the early days. I found it helpful to just be able to bin them and not add to the laundry at that manic time and not to worry about leaks so much. I wouldn't say they are a necessity though and I only ever used one pack each time. The massive Lil Lets maternity pads were my fave both times again for that first week or so then moved to slimmer ones for the next few weeks. I bled for ages both times but it was only really the first week or so that it was super heavy.

Tesco maternity pads always served me well! Never used the pants

lightelmqueen · 17/10/2023 20:22

I never used disposal underwear with either of my labours. Maternity pads/large maxi pads were absolutely fine. I just bought a couple packs of Primark knickers that I wouldn't worry about having to throw away if they got ruined

bettynutkins · 17/10/2023 20:39

No disposables here either.

Got huge black pants from Primark. I found the Lil let's maternity pads the best! Wish I'd used them first time round.

Olika · 17/10/2023 20:41

I used maternity pads and they worked well

DappledThings · 17/10/2023 20:44

I didn't even know you could buy disposable pants. Maternity pads were fine.

PureAmazonian · 17/10/2023 20:46

I used lillets maternity pads and big pants. They worked amazingly!

Livingmagicallyagain · 17/10/2023 20:54

Definitely not disposable underwear! Changing/putting it on is an unnecessary faff in the early days (you can tear them off easily but getting them on not as easy as simply replacing a pad).
The Medicare hospital pads are great for the early days with soft cotton big pants. Then the lilets pads are brilliant.

gotomomo · 17/10/2023 20:57

Used disposable plus maternity pad for first, just used ordinary underwear and nighttime always for second

FairyliquidBottle · 17/10/2023 21:39

Thank you all really appreciate it! I will just go for the pads then and go to Asda/primark to get some big underwear 😁thank you for the suggestions regarding which brands you used too. I will go have a look on the weekend

Never used disposable pants, just big black knickers as others have said and either Tesco or Sainsbury’s maternity pads. Tesco also do some slim ones which are good once the bleeding isn’t quite so heavy.

NameChange2589 · 17/10/2023 22:20

Third time round and I used maternity pads with period pants, no leaks whatsoever. Didn’t like the disposable underwear at all.

apapuchi · 17/10/2023 23:25

Big black knickers and Lilets maternity pads, the latter are brilliant and I bought a multipack on Amazon which saw me through.

notanothernamechange12 · 17/10/2023 23:29

Used tesco maternity pads the big surfboards with big knickers/my maternity knickers. No leaks and very comfy.

Im a size 16 with a sizeable arse so disposables just didn't seem a good option for me 🤣

JustAMinutePleass · 17/10/2023 23:31

I used dog pads in bed as I couldn’t handle knickers for a long time. They were so comfortable and afterwards we used them for DS’ nappy free time

CyberCritical · 17/10/2023 23:35

Just pads here too, the Boots maternity pads which were massive and very thick and squishy. I did make the mistake of trying Always NightTime pads and that did not go well! I had a second degree tear and turns out stitches don't like being dried out by super absorbent chemicals and fragrances, they stuck and got sore.

I very much liked the pads that I poured witch hazel onto and stuck in the freezer, they felt blissfully soothing.

Nochoiceleft · 17/10/2023 23:35

I didn’t use disposable knickers or maternity pads. I wore normal underwear and night pads. Found the maternity pads far too uncomfortable.

Blue2020 · 18/10/2023 06:56

I used boots maternity pads and they were fine.
