Contraceptive implant

Hello all!

I am thinking about what type of contraception to go on for now. I am seriously wanting the arm implant, however, I read that one of the risks are potential acne????

Does anyone with experience know how likely this is? I used to suffer with acne, recently though, it has all been fine - I don’t want it to flare up again!!

Any advice?

Thank You

I've got it now and used it for 10 years only removing it to get pregnant. Not experienced any acne

Thank you. Would you say it’s worth it? Any other side effects ? Xx

I had it and I bled constantly. GP suggested taking the pill as well for a few months and see if it stopped. As soon as I stopped the pill the bleeding started again.

The bleeding was a blessing in disguise though because it also made me really anxious and stressed. I was constantly irritable, life just felt rubbish. It wasn’t until I had it removed that I realised that’s what was causing it. It was literally a weight being lifted. If I didn’t have the bleeding I would have kept it in and would still be miserable.

I know it does suit a lot of women, just keep a really careful eye on your mood if you do try it.

On the other side I just insisted on getting it removed. I hated it. I've never had acne like it and it just made me feel really bleh. Also went from no periods on the mini pill to frequent random periods on implant.
Lots like it, it didn't work for me

Smurf123 · 16/10/2023 15:01

@DuploTrain described it better than me but yea i has the same experience

HaplessRhombus · 16/10/2023 15:01

I had one for about 15 years both pre and post pregnancy. Acne was never an issue for me, although I wasn't prone to it before so not sure if my input means anything.

chillin12 · 16/10/2023 15:02

Oh no, lots to think about then. I am 29 and this would be my first time on some sort of long term contraception. Hmm

Oh gosh, that sounds awful. I already have mood problems anyway - so don’t wanna risk that

Yes it's been brilliant for me. It even stopped my periods for years.
The covid vaccine did trigger them again so I do sometimes get one now and again.

chillin12 · 16/10/2023 15:07

I am also currently breastfeeding my 3 month old. Any other advice is welcome x

I never had any side effects from it, except my periods stopping completely. My periods came back straight away and were regular when I had it removed in order to TTC and I got pregnant first month of trying (five months after removal).

I've been off it again now for about four months and again my periods came back and are regular. I feel exactly the same as I did when I had the implant in, both moodwise and physically.

I won't be having it put in again post-baby because the removal in June was annoying. Not at all painful but they struggled to find it and it's tedious to lie on a bed for an hour while they hunted for it. None of my other removals have ever been like that, but I'll probably just use the pill.

dahliadiva · 16/10/2023 15:09

I have the implant now, had it for about 5 months. It's a fantastic contraceptive because it makes you bleed 3 weeks out of every 4 😕 I'm this close to having it removed.

chillin12 · 16/10/2023 15:12

Wow, lots of mixed responses. Will need to think hard and might be inclined to give it a try. I have an appt soon to discuss it!

I’ve been using them for 15 odd years. No real side effects except loss of periods for the first year or two of most implants. Very reassuring that it works without you having to remember to take anything, it’s the only contraceptive we use and it’s very reliable.

pancakeontoast · 16/10/2023 19:57

Had it for about 16 years but it's making me fat and my libido has vanished

cloudnine13 · 16/10/2023 20:14

I had the implant for 10+ years, I had it out a year ago to try for a baby, no acne. No side effects at all over the 10 year period

Dyra · 17/10/2023 17:14

I've used it as long term contraception since having my first. No side effects, but then I already had zero periods, was fat, and had zero libido before the implant. No acne either, but then I've never really been prone to it.
