Kendamil - Pre-made bottles expiring soon

Hi all

I ordered 2 boxes of pre made bottles for the Hospital and for home (the 70ml ones with the sterile teats)

I should have checked but I didn't and the expiry date is 15th November. I am not due until a a few days after. I know the baby may come earlier and then we can use them but if not then is it really bad to use premade milk that expired a few days ago? Has anyone done this?

Don't want to throw it all away now so might just find someone who needs it if they use Kendamil

For myself, I play very free and easy with best before dates.

But I really wouldn’t for a newborn, sorry!

Offer them to someone who is due before then

dementedpixie · 15/10/2023 16:39

Is it a use by or best before date?
Or sell/give it away on fb

Blueskies975 · 15/10/2023 16:43

@dementedpixie it's a best before date :-(

Thank you all, i'll try to find someone who is due before then or already has a baby using this milk. If not then will give it away on fb or something

Best before is OK as that means quality may suffer but its not dangerous to use after that date.

Use By is where you shouldn't use it after that date and normally appears on foods like meat, dairy, etc

Blueskies975 · 15/10/2023 17:37

Thank you@dementedpixie for sending that over to me! Very useful stuff. They suggest to smell the milk if it has a BBD to see if it's okay as you said the quality suffers but won't be dangerous. I will hopefully have had the baby by that date and will hold onto a box maybe just incase. Thank you :-)

It’ll be absolutely fine. Shortly after I started working in a shop we had someone who had bought out of date baby milk and had contacted trading standards. The shop was contacted to say that the milk is packaged in a sterilised environment and is perfectly safe for around 2 years past best before date after that it deteriorates and won’t be as nutritious. I don’t think I’d use it that far past but a week or two I wouldn’t worry about at all.

Blueskies975 · 15/10/2023 22:52

@PickledScrump ah that's interesting! Thank you for sharing that with me. I was wondering too whether a few days would make any sort of difference really. I will pack it in the bag :-) thank you all

Are you planning on exclusively bottle feeding? I was in for one night and used way more than one box of the little pre made milks. Once opened it only lasts 2 hours and newborns stomachs are the size of a marble so they eat little and often. Some babies may drink more and go longer but ours drank very little at a time but often. Our hospital provided some formula but not kendamil so wouldn’t want you to risk running out if you’re exclusively bottle feeding. Definitely take both boxes if you’re going to use them.

@allgoodthings84 ah i didn't think of this. I appreciate your advice and will pack 2 boxes. Thank you! Also I just kind of thought about the stock issues with Kendamil (which is why I had to go online to find the bottles) and i'm thinking to switch to a formula that's more readily available and will be sure to take in atleast 2 boxes if not more just incase

Hey, I know it's been a while since this post but I have the same issue!
I'm due the 13th September but the BBD is 9th September on the Kendamil hospital packs I've ordered. Did you end up using them anyway? I'm torn!
Thanks
