Did the sonographer reveal sex

Ok help me out with this because I am driving myself absolutely insane!

We had our 20 week scan this week and told the sonographer we didn’t want to know the sex. At the end I asked her out of interest whether she knew and her response was “I don’t know, boy or girl makes no difference to me” then as she handed me the scan picture she said “look you can see HIS eyes” and I felt she properly highlighted the HIS. She was quite unfriendly and miserable through out the whole scan and I can’t help but think she did it on purpose or was she trying to throw me off!

At this point I’m on the verge of booking a private scan because I can’t stop going over it 😂

When we had our daughter the sonographer used his. We had said we didn't want to find out what we were having and he'd said his so we assumed as you have done that he'd given the game away. Nope... we had a girl.

Thanks @Tiredmum12389 i did wonder whether they just use general pronouns because they don’t like saying “it” I think it was just because she said it just the once. It’s a long time to wait to find out yet!

Our sonographer started using “his” only after going over the baby’s legs so I was convinced she’d inadvertently told us and we were having a boy. So much so that I refused to discuss girls’ names. I was so upset that she’d ruined the surprise. Midwives kept telling me not to read anything into to it, apparently sonographers always use “he” for baby to differentiate from “she” the mother.

Lo and behold the baby was a girl. Biggest shock of my life.

@CarrotSoupwithCheese this is exactly how I feel! Like she’s ruined the surprise and I’m annoyed that she’s made me obsess over it like this 😂

i do wonder if she said “he” to you to throw you off and make you believe you were having a boy so that you had more of a surprise!

When I was pregnant I'd already been told I was having a girl, but during a growth scan the sonographer commented that baby looked like a 'little old man" and used the term "he". I instantly panicked and said "did you just say he?!" To which she replied "oh, I don't know I haven't looked" and then she looked for me and actually confirmed girl. They all just seem to generically use male pronouns even if they haven't looked

GoodVibesHere · 13/10/2023 21:41

They do sometimes just say 'he' rather than saying 'it' or 'the baby'.

You're not going to know for sure, so it's still going to be a nice surprise.

Topez2 · 13/10/2023 21:44

My partner and I both thought we were having a boy because the sonographer kept saying 'he' throughout our scan before she confirmed we were having a girl.

LunaandLily · 13/10/2023 22:09

You didn’t know before the scan and you don’t know now so what is the issue? My DD was referred to as he and she in a 20 week and a 28 week scan, it is completely interchangeable to the sonographer. Not good she was a misery guts though!

Dappledgrey · 13/10/2023 22:21

Thanks everyone! You are all right I still don’t know what the baby is and no amount of obsessing is going to change the fact that it is still going to be a surprise!

I do wish she had been a bit more friendly I know the scan is to check baby’s health but at the same time it’s still a special moment to see your baby. I’m glad I didn’t find out as it definitely wouldn’t have been special.

I will try to remember to come back and update!

I also wouldn't read too much into it and try not to think about it too much, it will still be a surprise!
But if you have any further scans maybe don't ask the sonographer if they can tell the sex! If you don't want to know then why ask the sonographer that question and leave it open for them to slip up and say he or she accidentally.

SisterAgatha · 13/10/2023 22:31

My boys we didn’t need the sonographer to confirm. We could see even before we were asked as both boys seemed hell bent on waving it about. So they said “his” because it was so obvious.

My girl, I was scanned every second week, and not once did we know. They just said “baby” or “their” as far as I recall as I don’t think they could tell either. I asked several times and always legs crossed. I had a private scan in the end and it took ages to confirm!
