When did you tell work?

Hey all

when did you tell work you were pregnant? I know it’s going to go down badly and I’d rather wait until after 12 weeks but does that seem late?

You tell them when your ready I’m sure it has to be by 28 weeks (don’t hold me to that) x

TTCbaby2023 · 10/10/2023 14:12

I'm almost 17 weeks and haven't told yet. I'm dreading it as our team has just been restructured with people getting fired and now being short staffed.

DesertSnow · 10/10/2023 14:47

It's totally up to you, as long as you follow legal guidelines and you might want to check your work's policy. I told my boss at perhaps 7 or 8 weeks as I was quite poorly with it, but wider team I didn't tell until perhaps 15 weeks. After 12 weeks is totally fine.

RoseRows · 10/10/2023 14:50

I told my manager when I was around 8 weeks as I was quite ill in the first trimester. I told the wider team after my 12 week scan.

WinterCarlisle · 10/10/2023 14:52

Depends on your job. I work in an environment which can have potential hazards for pregnant women so pregnant staff tell managers very early on. I think I was about 8 weeks, maybe less.

Katrinawaves · 10/10/2023 14:53

If you qualify for statutory maternity pay, you should tell them by week 25 and give them your Mat B1 which the midwife will issue around week 20 or a letter from your doctor confirming the pregnancy and due date.

There is no obligation to tell them any earlier but you might want to do so if you need a risk assessment or want paid time off for ante natal appointments

Happysad92 · 10/10/2023 14:54

I told my workplace after my 20 week scan, this was only because I wanted to wait until the anomaly scan was done. This was to put my mind at ease as I am generally a very anxious person (have anxiety attacks). And, also my colleague was also pregnant, 2 months ahead of me, so did not want her to think I was stealing her thunder. 😄 It went fine, everyone was very supportive and happy.

MuffyRogers · 10/10/2023 14:54

I told them after the 20 week scan.

Dogon · 10/10/2023 14:55

I told them straight away, as soon as i found out. But I'm in a job where I work with potentially unsafe chemicals, so I didn't have a choice.

inquisitiveinga · 10/10/2023 15:09

I'm 11 weeks with hyperemesis and told them at 6 as I had absolutely no choice. Have been off for nearly 6 weeks now

ASGIRC · 10/10/2023 15:55

Im not in the UK, and where I am I only have to tell them 10 days before Im sure to go on maternity.
Obviously I will be telling them before then. But I am currently 15 weeks and I think I will wait until the anomaly scan at 21 weeks, if I can hide it that long (I am not currently showing)

My line manager knows, I told him at 9 weeks, but hes a long term friend. And by telling him I could ask him to not book me many (or any!!) graveyard shifts!

Scaredycats · 10/10/2023 17:04

I told my manager at 7 weeks because I was very sick and needed time off. But my company has excellent maternity provision and I knew I wouldn’t be penalised for it. In your shoes I would keep quiet as long as possible, up until 25 weeks when you have to tell them.

Olika · 10/10/2023 17:32

You don't have to rush to tell them as for statutory maternity leave you can leave it until 15 weeks before due date. I preferred waiting as late as possible in case there were complications found out in any of the tests or scans but once they all showed this time around all was fine I was more relaxed to stop hiding my pregnancy.

TrudyProud · 10/10/2023 19:24

I told my boss at 13 weeks mainly because I'm a senior leader and didn't want to leave my company in the 💩 with recruiting my backfill.

I didn't tell my team until I was 23 weeks.

Personally, it was important to me to set the tone with my senior leadership that I was pregnant but still focused. It's paid dividends because I'm 28 weeks and have just been promoted again .

Wolvesart · 10/10/2023 19:27

I thought you were meant to tell them at 3 months, health and safety audit etc.

Olika · 10/10/2023 19:54

@Wolvesart you have to tell latest 15 weeks before due date for statutory maternity leave.
