What does your newborn sleep in?

Hi,

I'm due to give birth in three weeks. This will be my third child. We live in quite a small property so trying to find convenient options to save on space. I was going to get a new to you crib but the lady in John Lewis kind of put me off by saying they only last a few months because once baby starts rolling sitting up etc they aren't safe. She did recommend a Moses basket. Can someone give some advice. What does or did your newborn sleep in?

The bedside cribs last a lot longer that a Moses basket 5-6 months as opposed to 6 weeks our case ,what did your others sleep in?
I’d possibly consider a pram carrycot that’s suitable for overnight sleep (not many) as we used the pram for downstairs day and evening naps/sleep and would have been handy to have been able to take this up to bed.
You could get a larger next to me cot, or a space saver cot?

I would get a Moses basket. Get a snuz baskit as they are bigger and lightweight so you can move around each room.

The next to me was massive and it’s not really movable. And out Ds still couldn’t use after a few months as they can’t use once they can pull themselves up as fall out.

PickledScrump · 10/10/2023 11:44

Don’t get a Moses basket, they grow out of them so fast. Usually around 6 weeks. A next to me style crib is much better. Mine was in them until around 8 months, only stopped using it as she was starting to pull herself up by then. They are still perfectly safe once babies start rolling as they still have sides, it’s only once they start pulling themselves up or reach the weight limit you need to move them out, for most babies that’s after 6 months anyway by which point they can go in their own room.

What a strange thing for her to say - a next to me will last a lot longer than a Moses basket! DD was fine in hers until 6 months

Caspianberg · 10/10/2023 12:40

@PickledScrump - Ds could pull up and stand by 4.5 months, so couldn’t use next to me overnight after that, only daytime with me next watching him
Seeing as it cost at least double a Moses basket, that’s probably why.

PickledScrump · 10/10/2023 13:01

@Caspianberg i did clearly say “most babies”. Obviously some will be earlier/later generally it’s expected at around 7-12 months so most babies will be absolutely fine in a next to me until 6 months.

RidingMyBike · 10/10/2023 13:06

Moses basket is a bit pointless - - mine grew out of it by 3 months!
Next2Me was fast as tic. Lasted 6 months fits rig next to bd so very convenient and good resale value.

RidingMyBike · 10/10/2023 13:11

The Next2Me is also really manoeuvrable as it has wheels. We used to wheel it into the spare room one night a week and DH sleep in there too so I could have a weekly night off!

Caspianberg · 10/10/2023 13:12

@PickledScrump - ok. Just my opinion. For us it didn’t last any longer than the pram carrycot. And I found it bulky and awkward to get in and out of my own bed carrying baby. I gave it away as would never use again. Hence suggesting a Moses basket, the snuz basket which is 50% larger than most baskets so should last op enough time to put in cot. And can be moved around in small flat.

Caspianberg · 10/10/2023 13:14

@RidingMyBike - how did you do that? As Co sleeper you have to attach it to main mattress so it’s a right faff to move.

BumblebeeBum · 10/10/2023 13:16

The most space efficient sleeping option would be co-sleeping.

Worddance · 10/10/2023 13:19

Hammock

PickledScrump · 10/10/2023 13:35

@Caspianberg most pram carrycots are suitable up until 6 months too. It’s what most people seem to use for downstairs napping. You seem to have some sort of personal problem with next to me cribs. As you can see most people are recommending them. Also ref the moving it. It’s really easy to attach and detach from a bed so it can be wheeled around. If you don’t like them, that’s absolutely fine, but trying to argue with people recommending them is a bit silly don’t you think?

InTheRainOnATrain · 10/10/2023 13:41

The cot. If it fits in your room then you don’t need anything else. I know you say small space but I don’t know if you mean your room is really small or just that there isn’t that much space in the flat total so you don’t want to have unnecessary stuff- we were the latter so cot from newborn was what we did. You can put the mattress on the highest setting so it’s easier to lift a newborn in/out. My view was that if they were fussy and didn’t like it then we deal with that as/when and at least we won’t have wasted any money as they’ll inevitably go in the cot at some point. We also used the pram and Tripp Tapp high chair with the newborn pod for downstairs sleeps.

If you’re concern is space in your bedroom though (ie the big cot won’t fit) and you intend to follow the self sleep guidelines and have baby in with you for 6 months then definitely get a next to me (or similar) not a moses basket as that’ll last max 3 months and then what do you do? You don’t have to use the Next to Me as a cosleeper, if you don’t want to as it can be a standalone bassinet crib.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 10/10/2023 13:56

Bedside crib (a baby bay). LO slept in it for 6 months then into her own room and cot. We napped her in her cot for a few months first to get her used to it.

Never used a Moses basket as they outgrow them so quickly

@RidingMyBike - how did you do that? As Co sleeper you have to attach it to main mattress so it’s a right faff to move.

Didn't attach it to main bed, just kept sides up and put it right alongside. So baby is right next to you but the other side of the mesh side. Didn't want to co-sleep but did want her close so this worked really well and was very easy to scoop her out of it for feeds.

It's easier for cleaning too if it isn't attached as manoeuvrable - can move it out of the way for hoovering and bed changing.

Moses basket definitely. People just give them away on WhatsApp groups, just buy a new mattress. We had a giant baby and it lasted 6wks. Hated the next to me, it was so big and they never slept in it, would always cry. We had two Moses baskets, one up stairs and one downstairs. Was great for containing them whilst I made a cup of tea, went to the loo etc. They has two weeks in the next to me when they grew out of the basket, put them in the cot bed in our room at 8wks and they slept through the night! We bought a proper sprung mattress for it. We used the next to me as a travel cot and it was such a pain and so heavy, luckily we borrowed it so didn’t feel it was a complete waste. Highly recommend the nuna stardust for a travel cot. It is pricey, but it’s so light and easy to put up. Folds away to nothing. It has a newborn attachment. We used as a play pen and kept it downstairs to contain them when they started to crawl (again tea making and loo breaks!). We’ve only just stopped using it as a travel cot at 2 as they now can sleep in a bed.

ohpoowhatnow · 10/10/2023 19:13

Get a cot that you can take the side off and put next to your bed, and then when older just put the side back on and into their own room
