Hi ladies just wondering if this ham is safe to eat I know that nhs website says that cold pre packed meats such as ham are fine however maternity book says to avoid cured meats and I know most ham is cured I don’t think this one is as it does not say it anywhere on it?

I’m 25 weeks and have had ham like this throughout my pregnancy.

As it's cooked, I think it's fine? Cured meats refer to meats that aren't cooked, only cured - eg Parma ham or prosciutto?

RoseRows · 08/10/2023 15:23

Cooked packaged ham is fine to eat. Avoid prosciutto, Parma ham, chorizo etc though unless cooked.

YokoOnosBigHat · 08/10/2023 15:25

Cured means it's raw but has been treated in some way by salt/sugar/smoke/nitrates etc to preserve it. That's just been cooked in some way using heat, which is fine.

That ham should be fine and I ate that sort of thing when pregnant. Although, I know in my home country (antipodes) ham like this from a deli counter is not recommended. Not sure if the cooking/processing is any different or if its just not been updated.

Cooked ham like this is fine, I've literally craved the stuff throughout pregnancy.

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and haven't touched anything like this just incase as even though its small there is still a risk. same as hot dog meat its also cooked but can carry listeria. If you were any bit concerned about it and still want to eat it heat it to above 75 Celsius in the microwave before eating as this will kill listeria.

Current NHS advice on meats:

What you can eat

  • meats such as chicken, pork and beef, as long as they're well-cooked with no trace of pink or blood; be especially careful with poultry, pork, sausages and burgers
  • cold, pre-packed meats such as ham and corned beef
What to be careful with
  • cold cured meats, such as salami, pepperoni, chorizo and prosciutto (unless cooked thoroughly)
What to avoid
  • raw or undercooked meat
  • liver and liver products
  • all types of pâté, including vegetarian pâté
  • game meats such as goose, partridge or pheasant
