Internal scans

Hi, I just want to make sure internal scans are completely safe aren't they? They can't cause anything such as miscarriages can they?

No, they are frequently used in early pregnancy

CurlewKate · 07/10/2023 10:08

No. But you should always question why you need one. Invasive procedures should always be justified.

My uterus is tilted too far back, they can't see anything 😔

With an abdominal

Yes they are absolutely safe. The probe is only inserted a small way inside, doesn’t touch anything, doesn’t come close to the cervix. Sex is more intrusive and that is considered safe.

I have declined them every time it was suggested. And every time, they've managed to get the info they need abdominally.

One thing I've noticed is they seem to suggest intravaginal before even trying abdominal, so they're just assuming they won't be able to get the data abdominally.

If I were you I'd ask to see what they actually need to find out, why, and whether they've attempted to get that data abdominally first.

(Note: I know it's not harmful for the baby to do it intravaginally. But it'd be extremely distressing for me and that bloody matters too... I'm much firmer on that in my second pregnancy!)

OP- A retroverted uterus is still normal- just less common. I have one, so does my mum! The probe has a condom like, single use protection on it, plus lube. It actually doesn't go in that far as you might think and gives much better visulisation of the uterine cavity and tubes.

Why would you think it would cause a miscarriage???

I had one at 7w because it gives a better view. It didn’t hurt and baby is healthy and growing at 14w.

dementedpixie · 07/10/2023 10:32

I needed one as I am a bit fat and it was harder for the abdominal scan to get a good enough picture.

DemelzaRobins · 07/10/2023 10:34

I've had 5 internal scans to date. My first pregnancy was ectopic so I"ve needed internal scans at week 5 to confirm my later pregnancies have been in utero.

I've had different doctors each time at two different EPUs and they've all said internal scans are safe.

Pmd1 · 07/10/2023 13:30

100% safe. They are nowhere near the baby. I had 3 and baby is doing great now at 13 weeks tg.

ASGIRC · 07/10/2023 14:40

I had internal scans up until 9 weeks. That scan was abdominal, but it was really uncomfortable, and not very clear (it didnt need to be, it was just a confirmation scan).
They are perfectly normal and safe.
