Amalgam filling removal 12 weeks pregnant

Hi

I’m wondering if any dentists or if anyone else can help me with something. I’m 12 weeks pregnant and need to have an amalgam filling removed and replaced with a white one. This is because there is decay under the filling. I asked the dentists if it’s safe seeing as I’m pregnant and he said it was very safe and could add a rubber dam to stop anything going down my throat if that made me feel more comfortable which I said I would definitely want. However since then I’ve read online it’s not safe. I’m not sure if the treatment he is suggesting is urgent or if it can wait.
wondering if anyone knows is it safe or best to wait? I don’t want to do anything to put the baby’s health at risk obviously.
thank you :)

It is generally safe. The potential risk to leaving a decaying tooth is infection/abscess which also isn’t brilliant for baby. So depends how you look at it.

rubber dam is used to isolate the tooth from the rest of your month. And, the dental nurse will have a strong suction tube to suck up any loose filling as it gets removed by the drill so any dust/particles generated won’t be a problem.

I personally would go ahead with the removal.

Thanks for your reply @Jettyellow so you mind me asking do you work in a dentist or have any experience? Thank you

I had exactly this with no issues. Midwife was fine with it, dentist knew I was pregnant. Mine wasn't particularly urgent but I was confident it was safe.
