Is it worth buying newborn size?

Trying to buy a first born outfit for our baby and wondering if its newborn size I need to get?

We are having a boy and something tells me they are going to be big! Me and my husband are both tall and he was 10lbs when he was born. Very long limbs from what we can see on the scan!

I wouldn't want to get newborn and it be absolutely tiny but in all honesty I have no idea!

Both my babies were over 8lb and I’ve got a couple of weeks out of newborn. Up to 1 month is a better size and they seem to do a lot of it now. Get some on vinted then you can just put them back on it if not used

Check the sizing charts. Some newborn is very similar to up to 1 month in some places. When I was looking M&S, Sainsburys, Next and Asda were newborn up to 9/10lb. Whereas I think H&M were smaller. I got newborn in the bigger sizes as DD was predicted to be a big baby (she wasn’t).

Even if they are the right length and weight the clothes will still look too big to begin with though because they’re so scrunched up.

Yeah, this. Baby sizing varies wildly, go by the weights rather than the ages.

DS was 9lbs, and 0-3 was big but not swamping him from day 1. We were given lots of ‘up to 1 month’ stuff that fitted best for a couple of weeks. Some newborn stuff was too small.

DD was 8lbs1oz and fitted newborn and up to 1 month for a few weeks before needing 0-3.

My two DS’ were quite big at birth, 8lb 11oz/9lb 3oz went straight into 0-3mths. Many congratulations OP Flowers

Both of mine were 9lb9oz and wore JL NB plain white babygrows for a couple of weeks. I had a "going home outfit" in NB.

You end up with tonnes of 0-3 and 6-9 month outfits because people buy them you.

I know some people whose little girls were wearing tiny baby for ages.

I would get a few things because babies can be surprisingly small.

On the other hand DS was much bigger than anticipated.

DD had been small and needed "tiny baby" clothes and DS was measuring small, so much so that I had to have loads of extra scans to track his growth.

I went up to the hospital clutching my bag of tiny clothes and DS turned out to be a comparatively huge 7 1/2lbs so the tiny baby things didn't fit!

I sent DH home yo bring back bigger clothes and he ignored all instructions and bought back more fistfuls of teeny tiny clothes. Poor DS wasn't clothed adequately fit a couple of days.

Basically, buy a range of sizes!

My 6 week old was estimated to be around 8lb 9oz at due date but she was smaller and was 9lb 3oz at her 6 week check up (at 6 weeks and 1 day old). She’s quite long and is still in up to 1 month from next or Tesco. Newborn fits still but isn’t really long enough, in the feet especially so just stopped wearing that size a couple days ago.

basically it’s so hard to predict what to take in as it depends on so many variables. We only took in newborn but if you’re predicted a big baby I would take in some newborn and some 0-3. I found if way too big then their legs slip up out of the feet in sleepsuits when they move so I would get at least a pack of newborn in case.

Your scans will give you a sense of size. I bought 1 set of 3 grows age 0-1 month and they were too small for my 9 lb 13 baby! Went into 0-3 from about 3 days in and then stayed in them for a good while.

Get one just in case. But just order more if you end up needing to. Your baby will always need the bigger clothes so get more of them. You can't be sure if he will need the newborn size at all so just buy one newborn outfit just in case, so he isn't going home from the hospital in the nud if he's randomly born smaller than expected!

Get some newborn, it's fairly cheap to get one multipack of vests and one of sleepsuits. Both of mine were 7.5lb+ babies and yet were scrawny and in newborn for a good while.

Ladyj84 · 06/10/2023 06:20

My 2 girls were tiny baby then newborn and 2 boys newborn onwards. Grab a Preloved bundle they don't stay in them long but I think you underestimate how small

Superscientist · 06/10/2023 10:21

I always recommend Asda first size to new mums it's 6-9 lb and for us it bridged newborn and upto 1 month. My daughter was 6lb13 at birth dropping to 6lb8 and they were loose on her but fitted ok. She probably could have gone down a size but for a few weeks we decided not too. In the end she was slow growing and was in these clothes until 8 weeks, up to 1 month until 11 weeks and 0-3 months until 5 months. She is now 3 and still in a lot of her 12-18 month clothes!

We got a pack of first size vests and baby grows and 2 packs of 0-3 month vests and baby grows. When she was found to be small I then got more first size clothes. I would suggest the same. 5 vests will get your through the first couple of days and you can then figure out whether you need a different shop or size. Generally we found that Asda were smaller than Sainsbury's for example. Tesco and next were often quite slim in the body. M and s and frugi are roomy

I also have a very tall husband. Baby didn't fit in anything newborn size. Don't bother!

TakeMe2Insanity · 06/10/2023 11:00

I only bought 0-3months on basis both DH and I tall babies, dc came out at 36 weeks and tiny was big on him!
