2-3 Weeks, Doctors told me to call back when i think im 8 Weeks

We found out yesterday we were pregnant, clear blue says 2-3 weeks. Phoned doctors today and they told me to call back when i think i'm 8 weeks to book an appointment but the NHS website says to contact your GP/ Midwife as soon as you can (before 8 weeks).
I'm confused about what i should do? wait until 8 weeks not knowing if everything is okay or make a fuss about having an appointment?

thanks in advance x

I think this is quite normal… I didn’t see a midwife until after 8 weeks and I didn’t see a Dr at all. If you are worried, look up your local early pregnancy unit and go and see them if you have any pain or bleeding.

They mean 8wks from your last period. Most places ask you to book in with the hospital midwife team directly, I don’t know if anyone who had to register with the GP (the GP won’t be seeing you for pregnancy related things). They will book you in for an appointment before 10wks usually, just to fill in some forms and take bloods etc. They will then book your for your first scan around 12-13 weeks. From memory I think I contacted my hospital when I was around 8wks to book in. Had all my appointments and scans to schedule.

Congratulations!

Start taking your folic acid and vit D if you aren't already, and then get back into touch with your GP at the 8-week mark as they recommended. I don't think I saw anyone on the NHS side until my booking appointment at 12 weeks. There's generally no need. However, I did pay for a private scan at around 6 weeks because I was excited and, like you, wanted to check that everything was progressing as it should.

there is nothing really a doctor can do at this stage op, except check you are taking prenatal vitamins (unless you have other known health conditions that would need extra management). In the nicest possible way, a scan can’t detect a heartbeat or I think even a sac until 5 or 6 weeks at the earliest when it might show a foetal pole and sac, and nothing could be done if something did go wrong. This stage of pregnancy is a waiting game. The 8 week appt they will check some basic stats like blood pressure and refer you to a 12 week scan, and after the 12 week scan then you are really in the pregnancy process healthcare wise.

Hi OP, just wanting to reassure you as PPs have done that this sounds normal.

Book in with GP at whatever date they tell you. They won't touch you, weigh you or scan you, or ask you to provide a positive test. They'll just check you're taking vitamins and then send you away with a letter/leaflet with the maternity services contact info, for you to book in there for a midwife appt and first scan.

At the midwife appt you give a urine sample for hormone testing and ask any questions.

Rinse and repeat with a few scans along the way and then in 9 months you'll have your lovely baby! :) Wish you all the best.

You are 4–5 weeks pregnant. You can make the appointment now but it should be for week 8 or later. You’re following the guidelines, you’ve contacted them, and they’ve told you what to do.

CinderRosie · 04/10/2023 14:34

This is normal. In my area I had to call back when I was 6 weeks and they made my booking appointment, I had the earliest available and it was when I was 9 weeks.

DreamingofGinoclock · 04/10/2023 14:52

Not sure if it's same elsewhere but here you don't even need a GP appointment...our trust has a self referral form on the website you fill out ...you then get issued a booking appointment with a midwife which I think is 8 weeks? ...I found it weird as they never checked I was pregnant just took my word.for it that I had a positive at home.test (obviously the 12 week scan not long after confirmed I was pregnant)

Allaboard209 · 04/10/2023 15:09

I went on google, typed the local hospital name + maternity unit in, then scroll their page to see how to register with them and register directly. Then they will sort your booking appointment, then from the booking appointment they sort your first scan appointment date and anything else you might need. Doctors are very loosely involved, they can do your BP/ urine checks and give you the standard advice that is on the NHS website, and can see them if you feel anything is wrong. All the best!

Not sure what your procedures are in your area but for me I had to self refer to the midwife’s, my doctors only really deal with the community midwifery side of things. do you have any of your areas contact numbers for midwives etc? X

MyPurpleHeart · 04/10/2023 18:40

I found the doctors and midwife's aren't really that interested in you until you get to around 20 weeks! Then in the last 4-5 weeks they prod and poke and sweep every inch of you weekly 🤣

MariaVT65 · 04/10/2023 18:44

It’s the midwifery team/antenatal clinic you contact, to schedule in your booking appt for when you are 8 weeks.

Until then, make sure to take folic acid and vitamin D, and research what foods to avoid. Congrats :)

You aren’t 2-3 weeks pregnant. You work out how far along you are from your last period. The clear blue digitals are from conception so you need to add 2 weeks on to them generally but also they are notoriously inaccurate. So you will be at least 4-5 weeks pregnant now.

Most places you need to self refer to your local maternity unit. If you google your area’s maternity page there should be information on there on how to refer. You have your first midwife appointment at 8-10 weeks from your last period date. The Gp won’t do anything for pregnancy. Even at the midwife appointment they just ask lots of questions, do a urine sample, blood pressure and blood tests for various things. They don’t check your pregnant or that things are ok. You won’t have anything to check on baby until your dating scan at 11-14 weeks. You can pay to have a private scan earlier but even then I’d wait until 7-8 weeks.
