Awful evening nausea

Hi all,

I am coming up to 10 weeks with my first and have been suffering from really bad all-day nausea which started at 6 weeks. It starts just after I wake up and builds up slowly throughout the day, and from 8pm onwards I am curled up on the sofa/in bed in tears. I have not actually thrown up, "just" extreme nausea. The only respite is when I am asleep. I spoke to my GP who prescribed cyclizine, which I think may have helped a little for the daytime sickness but doesn't even touch the sides of the evening.

Conscious this might just be a case of riding it out and hoping it eases off around 12 weeks, but wanted to see if anyone could share any wisdom or advice as it is really debilitating.

Thank you!

Just wanted to share some solidarity as mine is the same at the moment. It's really testing isn't it.

With my son I had it from week 6-19 but I think the worst of it was centred around weeks 9-12.

Fingers crossed it will start winding down for you soon!

I get this too OP, I’ve found it’s worse when I’m tired or if I’ve been in a car. I’ve started eating my main meal at lunchtimes so I don’t think too much about eating at dinner time. Apart from that I usually end up in bed though!

I’m 16 weeks today and I had the exact same experience as you. The evenings have just been horrendous, with lots of tears and ‘I’m never doing this again’ statements. Never actually threw up, but felt like I’d got the worst hangover every evening, as well as dizziness and a feeling like motion sickness. No appetite when food was in front of me, but it getting so much worse on an empty stomach.

Again, for me it started about 6.5 weeks, but really peaked at 11 weeks. It’s honestly the worst I’ve ever felt, mainly from the sheer relentlessness of it. I had so many people say ‘oh it’ll get better when you get into the first trimester’ so when I hit 13 weeks and was still feeling it, I was so low.

I’m very pleased to say it has gotten so much better in the last week or so though! It’s just gradually got better until I’m finding myself actually feeling hungry now. I’m able to eat small portions of most things again. So if you are anything like me, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! It’s honestly so miserable, I’m sending you lots of well wishes that it eases soon for you! X

Thank you all so much for your responses so far, it's honestly just reassuring to hear others are going through similar and I am not overreacting! I think what scares me the most is the idea it might not ease up, but hearing your stories makes me feel more positive. If I can just see this as finite it will be a bit easier I think. xx

I’m 11 weeks OP and mine is still bad some evenings but the constant daytime nausea has got much better in the last week or so. I’ve lately had a couple of evenings with little or no nausea, there is light at the end of the tunnel!

For both my last pregnancy and this one, the nausea has been worst in the evenings for me as well. I am 11 weeks now and have been taking cyclizine for a few weeks but have started to be able to have a bit of a break some days. I found keeping a routine of taking it worked best, I took half a tablet with each meal. For me the nausea is definitely linked to tiredness so if I'm feeling really bad I just get myself into bed and listen to a sleep podcast to try to focus on something else while I nod off. It's total shit and hope we all feel better soon

I also find looking at my phone makes the nausea worse OP so I try and read a book instead

I had evening nausea too during my pregnancies, and I used to just go to bed early. I assumed it was worse because I was tired.

Poor you. The best pieces of advice I received were to rinse with mouthwash rather than brush teeth and to switch from pregnacare to simple folic acid plus vitamin D (much smaller tablets) Plus the usual stuff about eating small and often. Not sure that will touch the sides with you though as it sounds severe. This too shall pass 💐

Oh and when I felt nauseated I’d sometimes make myself throw up by touching the back of my tongue and would then feel a little better. Don’t know if you’re meant to do that though - that’s probably terrible advice.

Thank you all for the kind words and advice 🙏yesterday was a slightly better day for me, I am hoping I have maybe turned a corner at 10 weeks but trying to manage my expectations in case it comes back with a vengeance!
