Facing very preterm delivery at 27/28 weeks

Hi all,

Currently 27+4 and an inpatient in my local hospital as I have been diagnosed with IUGR and absent end diastolic flow from the umbilical artery Doppler. The Dopplers were slightly worse today so they’re thinking delivery will be very soon, I have another scan in 2 days time.

I am very scared about the baby coming so early - my last baby came at nearly 34 weeks and only had a short NICU stay but I am obviously facing a much longer road this time. Anyone any success stories to make me feel better? I’m finding it very hard to sleep and am constantly anxious. Thanks for reading

My 27 weeker is now 19 and at uni, my 28 weeker is 21 and working full time. It was a surreal slog in nicu and if you can stand it pump pump pump. Good luck and look after yourself take all the help offered

Just wanted to bump for you and give you some fingers crossed.

Im 23 weeks and have high PI in my uterine arteries so which can lead to what you currently have.

@AfterGlow87
Just wondered how things worked out for you? Facing a similar situation.

AfterGlow87 · 15/12/2023 09:36

@Everystep My little boy arrived at 28+2 weighing 880 grams. We did a 7 week NICU stay and he is home with us the last 3 weeks. He’s had no real complications thank god although will be for regular follow up until he is 2 years old. I hope you’re doing ok, it was the most worrying time and I know how hard it is

I got a bit further at 30 weeks. Spent 6 weeks in NICU. In the end I was sad to leave as they felt like my family. He has no long term issues and is a big strong sporty lad, now at medical school.

Thank you for the replies. It's positive stories like this that help us keep some hope, and also reminds us we are not alone in this.
@AfterGlow87 so glad you and little one are home now and things have been as smooth as possible. Wishing you both all the very best.

I am 26 weeks tomorrow, grateful for each day my little girl and I get through. Found at 20 week scan to have low estimated weight and sky high uterine artery PIs, diagnosed severe IUGR secondary to placental insufficiency, and being monitored by fetal medicine. Growth had slowed by the time we went back 3 weeks later. They offered us termination despite being over 24 weeks, intensive monitoring right away but she was so diddy at the time they basically said although the age was viable, the weight wasn't really, so we decided to try and hold off for a couple of weeks but were told she may not make it. Back just before Christmas and just hoping for some growth, and will have to see what the dopplers are looking like.

@Everystep our story very similar to yours! We also had severe IUGR and the Doppler issues were picked up at 23 weeks - we declined admission at 24 weeks as they may have delivered based on a CTG and the outcome would’ve been very poor. I had intermittent reversed flow detected at 26 weeks so I was admitted then and scanned every 2 days until they decided to deliver based on a non reassuring heart rate trace

Multiple consultants cited 28 weeks as the “magic number” in terms of improved outcomes for babies and that certainly rang true for us. Every day counts at the stage you’re at so I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts x
