What to expect at first midwife meeting

Good afternoon everyone!

I have my first midwife appointment on Tuesday (eeeeek! Blush).

What actually happens during it?
Do bloods and urine samples get taken?

What's happened at yours? I'm hearing different stories and I'm mainly curious about the blood being taken as I have my flu jab booked a few hours after and I don't like needles much so need to mentally prepare even more 🤣

Blood pressure, blood taken and wee sample :) and then it was just doing dates and confirming details

I think they are different depending on your trust. Ours is bloods taken, urine sample, blood pressure taken, height and weight. Then a long and detailed set of questions about mine and DH family / medical history, including any medical conditions, genetic conditions in the family etc. Total appointment time was around 1hr. But i've heard that others have that done by phone separately.

Mine was over two hours! This was for our third baby and the first two were born overseas, so maybe that was why it took so long. I was exhausted by the end! Yes, blood and a urine sample were taken.

Mine was just the questions, for an hour or so, prepare to give details about your full family history of any illnesses etc and the same for your partners side! But mostly your side, high bp, diabetes, any mental health stuff etc, childhood illnesses, vaccines, any current health issues, then weight and height so they can work out your bmi...

Some people also have bloods/urine but I had that in a separate appointment a few weeks after! Like you've said everywhere seems to be different! This will be a common theme throughout your pregnancy, everyone seems to get different appointments and advice 😂

When does the first appointment take place and how would you book one? Did your gp refer you?

I contacted my GP and they referred me to a midwife and after a few weeks they sent me a form to fill out

The only bit I remember boggling me was asking about whether I was at risk of domestic violence. Which of course makes total sense, but I wasn’t expecting it and it threw me.

MariaVT65 · 25/09/2023 10:23

It’s commonly around 40mins to an hour.

Urine test and blood test. And your height and weight get taken to calculate your bmi. And blood pressure. This may differ in area but I also had to do a breath test which I think was to test carbon moxonide.

You will get asked a lot of questions about yours and your partner’s medical history in terms of history in the family of certain conditions.

You’ll usually be given a pack of info as well. At mine I had a student midwife take me through what things to avoid eating and drinking, some of which I hadn’t known about.

They’ll also ask you about taking vitamins such as folic acid and vitamin D.

It should be fine to have your blood test in one arm and flu jab in the other. Blood tests if the midwife is good is less painful i’ve found.

Oh yes you might also get asked this and also about FGM.

I had mine a week ago. They said to allow an hour but it took 40 minutes. Had to do a urine sample before I went in, they had pots in the waiting room. Lots of questions about medical history, previous pregnancies, my circumstances etc. Also asking whether me and DH were related Grin She took my height and weight, did a carbon monoxide test which is like a breathalyser. We still have paper notes in my area so she went through the booklet and everything else that was in the folder. Had bloods taken right at the end, I asked to lie down for mine as was already feeling nauseous and had not eaten anything so if you don't like needles I don't know if this may help you or not. Good luck, it made it all very real!

PinkRoses1245 · 25/09/2023 11:37

Mine was about 45 mins - urine, blood tests, height and weight, blood pressure. Then a whole load of questions about health, medical history, your personal/home situation etc. Pregnancy is going to be a good time to work on your needle fear!

PinkRoses1245 · 25/09/2023 11:38

Oh, and I don't want to be negative. but I wish they had told me what to look out for as symptoms to be concerned by, and what to do about it/who to contact. I had a late miscarriage and it was utterly confusing/stressful who to phone to get referred for help.

CinderRosie · 25/09/2023 11:44

I didn't even feel the needle for my bloods it was all over before I knew it.
