PREGNANT AND EXPOSED TO CHICKENPOX

Hi everyone,
I’m currently 15 weeks pregnant and took ds to a new play group today. DS (2) was playing in the ball pit with other children and noticed one of the girls was covered in weeping chickenpox, coughing and spluttering over all the other kids. Gestured DS away to play another activity but she kept following him 😩

Now starting to get worried as DS has never had it so not immune. I’m unsure if I ever had it as a child (DM died when I was a child and DF worked abroad so wouldn’t know).

Do I need to contact the midwife/GP and inform them seeing as I’m not sure I’m immune? Thanks in advance😊

You can get a test that checks if you have immunity/antibodies for chicken pox

@MadeForThis great thanks :) Do you think the midwife would be able to sort it or best going via gp?

Have you had booking in bloods? Think they can test that sample for antibodies. Who.is easier to get hold of; MW or GP?

It's extremely unlikely to reach adult age without ever being exposed to chicken pox so chances are you're immune. If not, then getting vaccinated asap can deflect the illness breaking out or just ending up with a mild case.

Chicken pox is also potentially most dangerous in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. So even if you were exposed, you would be on the tail end of that before the incubation period is over (17-18wks).

Lastly, what sort of CF brings their child with blistering chicken pox to a playgroup?! Dear god.

You need to go to your GP.
This happened to my when I was pregnant - DH's colleague came into work with chicken pox. Neither his nor my mum remembered either of us ever getting chicken pox so we both had to get tested - and then it turned out neither of us had antibodies. So he had to stay home for a week or two from work.
In the end is was fine though; he didn't catch it and didn't pass it on to me.
DD then caught chicken pox when she was 4 and neither of us caught it then, either. So I don't know if the antibody tests are just not that accurate or maybe some people are just naturally immune?

Long story but basically just go to your GP and they'll tell you what to do.

Absolute CFs taking a child with active chicken pox to a soft play centre. WTAF.

@User342465662 you can't get the chickenpox vaccine when pregnant

Thank you all. I’ll give the Gp/midwife a ring. Hopefully all will be ok, most likely I’d have had it but can’t say for sure!
If I had had it as a kid, would I automatically be immune?

I couldn’t believe my eyes either when I saw her! How inconsiderate taking her to a non compulsory playgroup. Her mother should be ashamed 😡

You tend to get immunity from a bout of CP. Both my kids had it and neither dh or I caught it as we'd had it in childhood
