Blighted ovum miscarriage

Hi, I’m just looking for other people to share their experiences really, and I also have some questions if anyone is able to answer them. So I’ve been spotting which then turned to red bleeding for over a week so I had an early scan yesterday which showed an empty sac (I’m supposed to be over 7 weeks). I definitely haven’t got my dates mixed up because I know when I ovulated and got a BFP only at 9dpo. Anyway, the sonographer didn’t say it was a blighted ovum but from what I’ve seen on google it looks like that’s what it was as there was literally nothing in the sac. I ended up bleeding very very heavily and passed a couple of big clots yesterday, so I’m guessing I’ve miscarried the sac. I need to have more bloods done tomorrow to see if my HCG has doubled as they can’t rule out the possibility of the pregnancy being really early. My questions are:

  1. as there wasn’t even a yolk sac or fetal pole in the gestational sac, is it likely that the fertilised egg didn’t even develop into an embryo?
  2. if the embryo never developed would I still be getting really strong positive tests?
  3. once they confirm if my HCG levels have gone up/down will I be rescanned to make sure I’ve passed everything?

sorry for the long post just really really want some advice!

Sorry to hear this 😞
An embryo never develops in blighted ovum but the placenta and sac do , I would assume they’ll want to re scan you in a week and take it from there x

@Rockschooldropout thank you, it’s sad but obviously just not meant to be. Does this sound like a blighted ovum? I’m guessing if the pregnancy had got to week 6 they would be able to see something with no heartbeat and not just an empty sac?

If you are absolutely sure if your dates , then yes they should have seen a visible heartbeat at 7 weeks .. however They’ll most likely want to re scan in a few days or a week to make sure

I’m really sorry. Had a blighted ovum last month. I got a scan but only because I had a blood clot that wouldn’t pass and they had to check if it was the sac or clot. They didn’t mention it before that though so think it depends on how you are doing, bleeding has calmed down and no signs of infection. Although there is a sac and no foetus, your body still acts like you’re pregnant (this was the worst bit for me) so your HGV levels are sky high. The hospital told me that they can actually be higher than if your pregnancy is progressing normally. It takes a little while for these to come down completely and they told me to take a test three weeks after the miscarriage took place.

Hope this helps in some way. I’m really sorry and hope you are doing okay. It’s an awful thing to go through physically and emotionally so sending you love ❤️

Also my understanding in the development of the embryo is that it stops developing early on so I think that’s why in some cases they think it may just be too early to scan.

could not read this thread and not comment.. a misscarriage is truly heartbreaking but a blighted ovum is just a shitty experience of a type of miscarriage, infact cruel!.. to go through as someone has previously mentioned, your body still continues all the typical pregnancy symptoms as though you have a little growing life inside of you & this type of pregnancy can go undected until 12weeks(where they can then be diagnosed on a 12 week scan).. this happened to me in January of 2021(second misscarriage) but basically i got refered to epau after i felt/noticed some brown watery discharge in my knickers whilst out shopping, it was once i was their that i learned of this "blighted ovum"(never heard of it before)they scanned me took measurements, then told me that i will go onto miscarry, give me 3 options of what to do next, ect.. bearing in mind ladies i was 10weeks+6days pregnant (and i had already had my 12week scan sent through post before all this happened for the 3rd february) i had a sac greater than 25mm i think i remember rightly and this also is a way of confirming blighted ovum.. OP did they take measurements of the sac?.. also their was a spec of something seen in my uterine wall which they explained would of been the embryo but during early development after sperm meets egg & implants its then thereafter where embryo doesnt develeop gets reabsorbed back into your womb but the placenta & sac continue to develop as your body isnt aware that their is something wrong with the pregnancy (anything between 6 & 12 weeks for your body to then realise something isnt right) sorry for the long essay OP and to all you other ladies but by far the worst experience i have sufferd mentally & physically out of all my 3 misscarriages! dont want to go into detail about then waiting for things naturally to happen (which they did the following evening) at home 3 hours from start to finish but im sure you can all imagine... but OP after passing the sac i didnt have a scan to check that it passed as they described it to me & told me what to look out for i just had to take a pregnancy test typically on valentines day about 2weeks after.. hope thats answers any of your questions & has give you an insight x

@MummyTo4BoysXXXX im so sorry this has happened to you, it’s just awful! They didn’t tell me any measurements, but when I next speak to them I’m going to ask. I’m also wondering if the baby stopped growing and was reabsorbed? I’ve read of that too! I guess I’ll never know for definite. How long until you can usually start trying again?

@Eastcoaster im so sorry you had one too. It seems like they’re really common which is awful!
