Travelling at 35 weeks

How far away from home would you be willing to go after 34/5 weeks? I'll be nearly 35 weeks on Christmas day. Would really like to go to at least one set of relatives for Christmas (2.5 hours ish via train), and then to another's (further 2.5 hours, would then be 2.5 hours home).

Do it if you feel comfortable sitting that long. I flew to Ibiza at 34 weeks. Just make sure you take your notes in case you do have any need to visit midwife/hospital in the area you’re visiting.

I'm driving about three hours away for a wedding this weekend, on my own at 35+6 (I can't wait for a weekend to myself to be honest!)

But it depends on how your pregnancy progresses and how you're feeling closer to the time. If you do go bring your notes.

I travelled (by car) to family 2.5 hours away at 36 weeks and was fine. It all depends how you’re personally feeling at the time as everyone will have different experiences

trevthecat · 18/09/2023 21:22

Think it's completely personal. I was fine travelling that far, as long as dh was with me.
You may feel completely different.

Will give 2nexamples of my dc.... Drove home from Spain with 10 days to spare with 1 dd..
Was packed for a trip at 35 weeks and stopped off for a checkup. Had an emcs 4 hours later..
Take your notes op. Enjoy!

I would have, even planned to spend Easter with family that’s a 2hr drive away when I would have been 36 weeks.

Baby came at 35+0 but I did realise from 31weeks that I was developing preeclampsia so it wasn’t out of the blue. There were a few hospital trips between 31 and 35 weeks so we knew Easter was unlikely and too risky. If I had a smooth pregnancy (which it was until 31 weeks) then I would have travelled at 35 weeks.

If you feel up to it then go. Just be prepared with a hospital bag and notes just incase.

With my first I went here there and everywhere. With my second, I didn't even like going to the shop after 35 weeks 😂

Hufflepods · 19/09/2023 09:55

34 weeks first pregnancy I would absolutely have travelled to relatives for christmas.
I flew to a hen at 33 weeks!

If you're comfortable doing it then there's nothing wrong. Bring your notes just incase but it is incredibly rare to go into very early and quick labour at that gestation so don't panic about it.

AlexaCanYouHearMe · 19/09/2023 09:56

It's a no from me.

LittleBrownBaby · 19/09/2023 10:01

My friend gave birth at 35 weeks the day after Christmas while visiting relatives. The only thing that was tricky was not having a car seat there etc. he was in NICU for a week and she did find it hard having to go back to in laws rather than home. I sent her baby clothes and nappies in the post!

I'd just stick with whatever you feel comfortable with. I would do this personally, as you could still potentially have another 7 weeks of pregnancy.

Skyla01 · 19/09/2023 10:04

With my DD once I hit about 30 weeks I had bad SPD type pains affecting my pelvis and back. I wasn't comfortable sitting in a car at all, so a several hour trip would have been very uncomfortable.

Whataretheodds · 19/09/2023 18:11

Thanks all. Barring any complications at the remaining scans and check -ups I'll assume I can go and just go slow (and take my notes!)
