Is anyone having the covid booster?

miniworry · 18/09/2023 07:43

I've had all of the previous covid vaccines/boosters and now have had a text
From my GP that I am entitled to the new covid booster.

I'm not an anti vaxxer at all and have already had my flu vaccine this pregnancy but for
Some reason I feel uneasy about having the covid one.

What are peoples general thoughts on having the jab during pregnancy? I'm 16 weeks.

I'm quite happy for people to have their own opinions. The risk of dying from COVID at all is quite low so an individual might decide that's okay for them. If you WFH your risk is going to be a lot lower than a nurse or a teacher or a supermarket worker so again, you might make a different decision.

I just don't like the misinformation. I've always vaccinated and am science literate but even I had a wobble reading some of the comments on threads like this. Pregnancy is an anxious time, misinformation makes it worse.

I am based in London and my midwife told me that they are not advising pregnant women to take any of the covid jab. I asked why and she didn’t go into it, she just said pregnant women don’t need it.

Left me feeling weird but my guess is there are still studies on it… maybe?

MadamPia · 22/09/2023 17:34

Sharing this pic as my midwife said these are the 4 vaccines they recommend.

Sorry the image didn’t upload - it was an NHS flyer that I was given last week. The 4 vaccines are (during pregnancy) flu, whopping cough, (post pregnancy) MMR dose 1 and MMR dose 2

MariaVT65 · 22/09/2023 17:43

I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant. I’ve had flu and whooping cough vaccines but won’t be getting the covid one. I’ve had 3 already and I actually haven’t been offered another one.

None of my mum friends have accepted a 4th jab this year or last year either while pregnant.

My best friend is a midwife and she has actually said their trust hasn’t even given them guidance on whether or not to offer it this year. I’m told there is a general concern as obv the vaccines aren’t tested on pregnant women.

ai38 · 22/09/2023 18:01

@MadamPia I am also based in London and have received the exact opposite advice from midwife/hospital. NHS is offering the vaccine this year to all pregnant women and their website says pregnant women are considered in the risk group. I think that's telling enough.

I wouldn't just make these decisions based on the opinion of a single midwife. Earlier in my pregnancy, I asked my midwife about vitamins in pregnancy and she said I don't need it. Then I consulted with my GP and pharmacist and their advice was different.

Anyways, I got the vaccine on Wednesday at 27 weeks and everything has been fine so far. I didn't even get any symptoms.

The Royal college of obstetricians and gynaecologists have advised all pregnant women to have it this autumn, so unsure why some midwife’s aren’t recommending it either….perhaps the message hasn’t been relayed to all Trusts but always best to check governing bodies advice meanwhile.

MariaVT65 · 22/09/2023 20:52

Interestingly all the data I’m seeing quoted is from 2021, nothing more recent that I can see. Maybe this is causing some hesitancy.

caringcarer · 22/09/2023 21:01

I'm having one because I'm a carer for a disabled child and if I go down he's very badly affected. So I'm having it for him really.

MadamPia · 23/09/2023 09:24

@ai38 thanks for sharing. Hmm I think I will ask a few different professionals to get a mixed opinion.

I do wish more doctors knew about nutrition! I always have to go to a nutritionist as I always get weird advice from doctors (sometimes).

I am 23 weeks along and had my covid booster this week. I know everyone reacts differently, but for me I just had a sore arm and was a little under the weather the day after, but absolutely fine the next day, and baby has been kicking away :) My husband and I caught covid in 2020; he was extremely unwell (long story) and is now on immunosuppressive treatment as a result, so I've had all the previous jabs/boosters. I experienced long covid too and would never want that again, especially with a child to care for. I did consider this booster more carefully due to the pregnancy, but based on our past experiences, and as the NHS is still recommending pregnant women have it (even with the eligibility for e.g. age groups being tightened this year) it was a definite yes for me, especially with the third trimester coming up in winter. Plus I read that the antibodies your body produces pass on to the baby, so if I can pass some protection to him then that's great! :)

oliveroses · 24/09/2023 18:21

Yes for me too - I'm 33 weeks and had mine on Wednesday. I was worried about the rise in the new variant and there's a reason they are calling pregnant women for the booster now (there is a risk, esp in third trimester as pp have said). I also had my firstborn in lockdown and my planned c section was in isolation as I had asymptomatic covid. I am hoping to avoid anything like that this time round!

Sailawaygirl · 24/09/2023 18:43

When I had my covid jab this time last year I was in 1st trimester. They told me that they didn't have the full data on safety of vaccine in 1st trimester but no data that it was unsafe. They said data showed no increased risk for 2nd and 3rd trimester. I went ahead and very sadly the next day I woke up with spotting and scan confirmed no heart beat. However the dates suggested that heart had stopped beating a week or so before ..... so its likely to have been a very bad coincidence. It was the first time I didn't have any bad reaction to flue or covid vaccine as well. Any way bad coincidences happen and if it wasn't the covid jab I'm sure I would have found another way to blame myself for MC. I happily pregnancy again now 34 week and will probably have jab. I looked at the pregnancy and covid research again and it seemed to imply that there is less evidence for risk of early labour with covid now, but it was a quick Google. I get offered that jab anyway as I work with vulnerable ppl. I still think being ill with covid and being pregnant would make me more worried than having the jab on balance.

Longbarn5 · 25/09/2023 21:33

I'm in first trimester and if I have it I think I will wait to second,

Tippexy · 20/09/2023 16:48

I also know someone who works in the Pfizer lab and she said don't ever get it in pregnancy, there was no testing or evidence that it was safe before it was widely advertised as being the thing to do in pregnancy.

This is utter bullshit. No vaccine or medicines are trialled on pregnant women, for obvious reasons. What a surprise that the scaremongering posts are back again.

I'm puzzled by the logic of your post.
Are you saying:
These things are never tested on pregnant women, so therefore they're obviously safe,
Or
These things are never tested on pregnant women, so therefore their safety status is unknown and might be terrible?

CrazyCatMom · 28/09/2023 19:00

I’m a midwife myself and 16 weeks pregnant, had my CoVid booster on Tuesday. Bit of a sore arm, but that is preferable to CoVid.

Also hopeful that if I am able to breastfeed successfully, I will be passing antibodies on to LO :)

Anonymouse198 · 03/11/2023 22:26

Hi just reading this thread as im 17weeks pregnant and unsure on whether to get the new Covid shot as I read this information on the government website saying that they can’t assure safety in pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding shouldn’t have it?! Bit concerning. I had all my Covid jabs through covid and will get the flu one, so not anti vax, but just don’t know if it’s riskier to take an untested new vaccine or the risk of having Covid in 3rd trimester as I have a winter pregnancy …. Eeeek so hard to know what’s best!!

Is anyone having the covid booster?
Dinnerdate1 · 04/11/2023 00:14

I haven't had any jabs for covid at all. And caught it at 38 weeks. Baby was fine and so was I. It was like a cold tbh was completely shocked to find out I actually was positive. I ended up being induced early for other reasons and as I was testing positive we was given a private room and a midwife for the whole duration instead of being just left to it.
Pregnant again and wouldn't have any jabs this time either but my friend has had them all and the booster and she's fine and so is her baby. It's all personal choice really.

Holdmysunhat · 04/11/2023 00:54

I had my flu jab and Covid booster today. The pharmacist today said supplies of the Covid booster are very low and that I was lucky to get one so suspect that’s why they’re not being pushed widely onto pregnant women. Lack of supply rather than concerns.

MabelQ · 04/11/2023 00:56

I had mine about two weeks ago (I’m currently 27 weeks pregnant) based on my OB/GYN’s strong recommendation (and my own inclination!)

Baby’s still kicking away and growing, as far as anyone knows!

My doctor did mention that she’s had a number of mothers deliver early due to actually having Covid. Given that I nearly had an unplanned c-section with my previous pregnancy, because I got some sort of flu and was hospitalized due to that at 36ish weeks, I’m a firm believer in anything I can do to potentially minimize risks of severe illness this time around.

I’ve had each “booster” as it’s been offered in the last few years, and have never noticed any adverse impacts on my menstrual/reproductive health whatsoever.

The guidance here in the United States is firmly pro-expectant-mother-receiving-vaccine, and my doctor (who is extremely laid back in general) absolutely recommended it.

Thankyouthankyoujellybean · 04/11/2023 02:51

There's a known risk associated with not getting it. There might possibly be some risk with getting it but no evidence of one at this time.

I had it three weeks ago. Having had a chest infection mess up a previous birth, I'll do all I can to avoid any coughing.

Where is this info actually from? Could you link? Every medical professional I spoke to strongly recommended that I have the vaccine, including a consultant who said she saw several pregnant women severely ill with covid. I had the booster at 17 weeks and am now 20. I was a bit nervous about having it but did a lot of research and decided it was the best possible choice to protect my health and my baby's.

That screenshot is from December 2020. If you would like to fact check it and what it means, have a google:

It’s more anti-vax nonsense @preggo39. You did the right thing in getting vaccinated.

Fact Check-Britain's MHRA still advises pregnant and breastfeeding women to get vaccinated against COVID-19

Thousands of people have interacted with social media posts that falsely claim the British government has secretly revoked approval for pregnant and breastfeeding women to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Thank you @Tippexy

Mumsnet is great for so many things but there does seem to be a lot of anti-vax misinformation shared. It's quite worrying.
