Low lying posterior placenta

Had 20 week scan today all was fine just got told that I have a posterior placenta which is currently low lying so I’ll need a rescan at 32 weeks

ive had a previous c section, therefore I understand that I may need another if it does not move

Basically I’m just looking for anyone else’s experiences and whether it moved etc and if so by how many weeks

thank you

Following - I’m in the exact same position! 🤞🏼 it moves

Midwife sonographer here - I’ve found that the majority tend to move up, we routinely rescan at 34 weeks to give it enough time. Of course they don’t always but it’s not something I see too often

This happened to me at my 20 week scan. I had to go back the following week as they couldn't get all of the measurements they needed (not related to placenta) and by then it had already moved!

FirstMondayInMay · 15/09/2023 22:53

@Emsxox yeah, posterior but completely covering the cervix too! I’ve read it’s less likely to move when it’s posterior but it only needs to move 2cm to try for a vaginal delivery. Were you hoping for a VBAC?

Emsxox · 16/09/2023 08:03

@FirstMondayInMay I was going to opt for an elective c section anyway as I had a traumatic birth the first time which didn’t progress and both mine and my sons heart rate were through the roof so I didn’t want to potentially have the same experience again

I also read that posterior placentas are less likely to move and apparently if you’ve had a previous section they’re also less likely to move?! Only time will tell, i was just concerned about the potential bleeding before birth/giving birth quite early or having a haemorrhage after birth if it didn’t move

keep me posted how you get on xx

I was also diagnosed at my 20 week scan with posterior placenta previa partially covering cervix. Just had 32 week scan and I'm at 0.9 cm away from the os.

I've had one big bleed and on and off again spotting. We're going back at 34 weeks, and then probably again at 36 weeks. If it hasn't moved by then we'll schedule a c-section.

TUlip221 · 15/11/2023 11:28

@AfterGlow87 In your experience, is it likely a posterior low-lying placenta can move between 32 and 36 weeks? I'm also wondering if it doesn't move, what week gestation they would book a c-section for?

Thanks!!
