Retroverted uterus

Has anyone else discovered they have this? I found out when I had a private scan at 9 weeks, it made it very difficult to get a good look at the baby but I got the odd glimpse and could see the heartbeat. She rescanned me at 11 weeks to try to get a better picture.

The midwife sonographer did warn me that it might make it a bit tricky at my 12 week scan, which is next week.

Has anyone else had any experience with this or know of any other things to be aware of with this? I believe as the baby grows, the uterus pops up and is no longer hidden as much!

I have this and have 3 dcs. It makes early scans a bit more difficult ime but I've never had any problems with seeing baby at 12 week scans

I've got it too, really pretty common apparently and should have zero impact on your pregnancy aside from making scans a bit more awkward in the early part!

I do too. Have 2 children. No issues. Good luck x

I had this, mine is very retroverted, my scans pre 12 weeks all had to be internal and at 12 weeks I had to have a more experienced sonographer do it as the first one couldn’t get the angle/view they needed.
It flipped about 16 weeks and it was a bit painful - I could sort of feel it moving forward (such a weird feeling), I had a quite a bit of cramping for a few days but it’s not been a problem and now got quite a bump now.

Mine is retroverted and at 6 weeks I got the view you described having later on (small blob but heartbeat very clear) and at 9 weeks had one where I could see a very clear blob with head/torso distinguishable arms and legs visibly moving about. These were both external and I have a very high (40+ bmi).

Both scans I had a VERY full bladder though and they went in sort of where a c section scar would be (just above pubis) so very low down, perhaps some of the difficulty may be due to technique/ the machine.

I was told the 12 week might be more difficult (I suppose it needs to be more detailed for the nuchal translucency etc rather than just is there a baby and a heartbeat) but that baby would start moving the uterus forwards between 11-13 weeks so hopefully it might have corrected a bit by then! Just going to make sure I'm literally about to wee myself when I go in 🤣

Thanks for all the replies, glad to hear it doesn't seem to have any other effects other than making it harder to see. I did read on here that someone said it can give you more of a backache as the uterus is expanding but so far I've been ok.

@Endogal yes I am half expecting that they might struggle to get the NT measurement, which is a shame as I am almost 39 and naturally a bit more concerned about that. I did manage to see something that resembled a baby at the 9 week scan and at the 11 week rescan I could definitely see hands and legs! The sonographer could clearly see the face profile but I struggled a bit! Can't tell if the pointy bit is nose or chin :-). I went with a full bladder both times and then she asked me to empty it - I guess it just depends how it all presents at the time!

Apart from making smears ouchy. I had three babies no issues. The foetus sometimes hides anyway

I have this. Never had a problem getting good scans even at 8 weeks, it's just really important you have a full bladder. Apparently it will straighten it's self out as the pregnancy gets bigger and has no impact on delivery.

I have this, they managed to get all the measurements at the 12 week scan.
