Pelvic prolapse? Scared!

I’m currently 14 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and twice over the course of a month I’ve had a strange feeling down there so I decided to call the docs. She couldn’t fully confirm but said I have mild pelvic prolapse (what kind, I don’t know) and I have to see a gynaecologist.

I’m already struggling with this pregnancy that this has just put me in a dark place, mentally.

I’m back doing my pelvic floor exercises and no heavy lifting but has anyone got any positive stories to help me, please? Is it something that got better/eased/went away?

Thank you! x

Can I ask what kind of feeling?

It just felt like a tampon was trying to come back out, like something small was there but shouldn’t be

It does sound like you have the beginnings of a prolapse but you definitely need a face to face appointment with your GP & for her to confirm that's what the problem is & perhaps refer you to a gynaecologist if need be. I had a prolapse, albeit after my DS was born. To begin with I wore a ring pessary, which is likely to be the route they take with you. Try not to worry & book the appointment and take it one step at a time.

@NoUsername1001 That's exactly what I was experiencing this week at 17 weeks. Went to midwives who seemed puzzled. I'll keep an eye on it, thanks.

@Un7breakable definitely keep an eye and do your pelvic floor exercises! I’m currently waiting for an appt with my gynaecologist but I’m now losing sleep through worrying. Hopefully you get answers!

@someoneseatenmyapple thank you for your comment. I’m currently waiting for an appointment to see a gynaecologist to confirm further. Did your prolapse ease/go away? I know it’s totally different situations but I’m hoping it’s something that can ease. My mental health is deteriorating day by day.

From about 35 weeks in my second pregnancy I felt like the baby's head was engaged and would tell anyone who would listen. Nope, it was prolapse. After the birth it was quite obvious and was visible from the outside, which I found very disturbing! This was during covid so only DH got a look but it felt like my insides were hanging out.

I was referred to a Women's Health Physio who gave me a specific set of pelvic floor exercises to do four times a day for the rest of my life (!!) and reassured me that once hormones naffed off, it would become much better. She was right.

Three months PP there was a noticeable improvement, and again when I stopped breastfeeding. DS has just turned three and I cannot detect any hint of prolapse in normal life, only sometimes when I need to poop or have just pooped. I can live with that!

Some advice I was given: it's a muscle and if it gets tired, give it a rest. Lying down for 30mins is the most help (I know that's an impractical luxury for most people most of the time, but think of it as medication).

Right now, find a specialist physio and lie down as much as you can! And, you know, don't go trampolining 😀

I had this with my second pregnancy. I was referred to an NHS physio after the birth which wasn’t particularly helpful to be honest.

i then discovered pelvic floor trainers which helped massively. I don’t know why the NHS do not prescribe these, it would work out cheaper than the physio appointments. Google Kegel8 and read the reviews, they will tell you all you need to know. You can’t use it while pregnant but at least you know there is treatment waiting in the wings for after the birth.

You don’t need to panic. It will get better and as PP said, a lot is due to hormones so will settle again a few months after the birth.

Currently 37 weeks pregnant and I have the same thing at the moment. I've spoken to the GP, midwife and consultant about it and I've been referred to gyne. They've said there's a years wait for gyne and they wouldn't do anything whilst I'm pregnant anyway. I was assured a vagina birth would be fine though. I think it's a case of dealing with it until birth and then seeing what to do afterwards from what they've all said.

Sorry if I seem flippant btw - my mental health was also low when the prolapse was bad. I was very worried about potential surgery (and those horror stories about mesh implants gone wrong). Everything is much brighter for me, hence my attitude, but I do appreciate what you must be feeling.

@Thankyouthankyoujellybean no need to apologise, I really appreciated your comment. It really gives me hope! My mental health has picked up as I’ve read people’s responses and increased my exercises. Thank you so much 😊
