and I've just discovered I haven't had any previous exposure to it - therefore I am at risk.

Can anyone reassure me please?

Thanks

was it beef? i don;pt think there is any risk from eating rare beef... do you mean at risk of food poisoning?

scorpio1 · 03/03/2008 19:04

steak is fine IMO... i eat bloody steak

charleypops · 03/03/2008 19:06

Yes, sirloin in a "gastro" pub.

No, sorry, wasn't clear - toxoplasmosis

I think it's a small risk of toxo that charleypops is concerned about. It is an extremely extremely small risk - just think of all the things we do/eat before we get those little blue lines on the test. Don't worry, it's probably far more dangerous to cross the road than eating a steak that's not charred to a bone.

Lulumama · 03/03/2008 19:08

i thought the risk was only from pork

if you are not puking and having bad stomach pains now, you will be fine, IMO!

Wisteria · 03/03/2008 19:08

Is that another thing you're not allowed to eat when pg now then? It's getting ridiculous is it not?

Soon pg women will actually lose weight when pg

scorpio1 · 03/03/2008 19:08

the french eat steak Blue!! Pork is a risky meat, as is some types of fish.

VanillaPumpkin · 03/03/2008 19:10

Charleypops - Hello. Is it you from the old Junie thread? Hope so. If so it is me Cooperoo in a new guise. How are you? Congratulations . I often think of you and hope you are well.

charleypops · 03/03/2008 19:10

Just can't find any statistics of infection from steak. Am just in my 3rd trimester now which is the riskiest time. Just told dh he's going mad with me.

Gosh, what a rubbish OP of mine - I failed to mention I was pregnant too....

Hi Cooperoo, yes, I am indeed an old Junie! Hope you're well, and thank you!

Most Frenchies are immune though Fio as they've been previously exposed.

I usually have my steak medium rare yum but have been having it more medium when eating. No problems here.

scorpio1 · 03/03/2008 19:13

Stop worrying - im 34 weeks pg and had a massive bloody steak on saturday. Its fine!

Peachy · 03/03/2008 19:15

There's so many ways to be exposed to toxoplasmosis though- keeping cats, gardening in a place where cats haver relieved themselves- and you wouldn't even know.

REALLY would not panic!

charleypops · 03/03/2008 19:20

I'm trying not to but it's really hard when your only child has cp and you don't know why - when all the professionals said he was fine throughout the pregnancy. I can't understand how I've never been exposed - I was hardly hygienic as a kid (or student come to that) loved my cats and dog when I had them...

VanillaPumpkin · 03/03/2008 19:20

OH so glad it is you!!! How is your ds? I know you had a difficult time of it at the start and rightly took time for yourself, but as I say we all hoped you were OK and were thinking of you . How is your dog too? And the Mountain buggy??? .
Anyway congratulations! You will be just fine having had rare beef. How do you know you haven't been exposed before? Beef is not a prob though as others have said. Do not panic and take care!!!! Wishing you very very well!!!

VanillaPumpkin · 03/03/2008 19:23

Gosh just saw about ds's cp. What a shock for you . You have had an awful lot to deal with. Your head must be swirling. Please be reassured though by these wise ladies . There are no reasons for many things. As ggg said on a thread life is just shit sometimes. It is nothing you did or didn't do.

charleypops · 03/03/2008 19:24

Dog's gone , MB will be getting another airing with this one and in fact I've just bought a double MB for DS and new baby. Know I haven't been exposed before because I had a blood test in my first trimester. Really hoping we'll be ok - it's a very busy pub so can't see meats hanging around for long.

OP posts:
charleypops · 03/03/2008 19:25

Sorry, crossed posts. Yeah, DS was dx'd at about 7 months, it's been tough and surreal but we're ok.

OP posts:
VanillaPumpkin · 03/03/2008 19:26

Oh no, sorry about the dog too. You have had an awful lot to deal with .
Beef will be fine though I am sure.
Look forward to getting out there with ds and your new baby in your new MB! All positive thoughts for the future .

skidoodle · 03/03/2008 19:27

Your husband is mad with you for eating a steak?

I've been having rare steak all through my pregnancy.

3rd trimester is the riskiest time to eat steak? what?

really you need to calm down. food isn't poison.

If you're 28 weeks or so then presumably you can feel the baby moving about, right? So you know it's OK. Give it a poke if you're not sure. It might be a bit cranky at being woken up. If you feel fine then obviously you're not sick either.

Really if you've been avoiding eating rare beef the steak can't have been that underdone. There is no reason to worry.

charleypops · 03/03/2008 19:27

Thanks x

X-posted again......I hope you have been getting some good support following his dx. I am afraid I have no real experience. What a shock. You had an awful birth too last time didn't you? And wasn't ds in SCBU for a bit .
I am so glad you have found the courage to have another baby. Things won't be the same. Relax and try to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy as much as you can . When are you due?

YeahBut · 03/03/2008 19:31

The bugs that cause that live on the surface of raw meat so a steak that has been cooked on both sides will be OK. The real risk comes from minced beef where there is much more surface area that is then formed into, lets say, a burger. The bugs can then be present inside the patty. That's where making sure it is cooked all the way through becomes important. Try to relax. If you can't, give your midwife a call for reassurance.
