Admitted to hospital following cervix scan

Hi,

Has anybody been through similar please? I'm currently in the hospital after my 20 week scan as my cervix was measuring 1.3cm. It was measuring 5cm just only a week ago. The change is so quick and sudden, I'm waiting for a stitch as I type.

Has anybody been through similar? What was your outcome? I'm so scared.

I haven't been through this but I just want to send you a hand hold. Remember you are in the best possible place now and hopefully that stitch will keep your baby firmly in place until it's time for their arrival.

preggo39 · 12/09/2023 16:57

Hope you're OK OP.

Thank you, still in hospital waiting to be discharged. But had the stitch put in :-( just a waiting game now.

Amazing that you’ve had a stitch put in so quickly. I had a shortening cervix but didn’t know as they aren’t routinely measured at 20 week scans (unless things have changed) which sadly meant I did not have a positive outcome. So I’m thrilled for you that it was caught in time. All the best with the rest of your pregnancy.

@Blueroses99 I am so sorry to hear this 😢😢 x

Thank you 💐

There is a fantastic group on Facebook called Incompetent Cervix UK. The members are very knowledgeable and were incredible in providing advice during my second pregnancy as it is something that is often minimised and not treated properly. That’s why I’m so pleased you’ve had the stitch already. Some of us have had to fight to get them! There is a pregnancy sub-group for additional support.

@Blueroses99 I have just requested to join the Facebook group, thank you so much. Hopefully more answers on there ❤️

So glad you've had a stitch put in successfully.
They tried with me at 19 weeks but my waters went after the epidural so you're very fortunate.

In second pregnancy it was put in at 12 weeks and I carried to 40 weeks.

Make sure you ask for antibiotics to go home with (usually for 5-7 days course) and a follow up transvaginal appointment with a specialist in your area.

Pm me if you need any more info.

Yes this happened to me - I was 22 weeks and cervix suddenly shortened to 1.7cm.
It was too late for the stitch for me so I had an Araban pessary which does the same thing it's just non surgical.
I did bed rest till 37 weeks and we made it.
Wishing you all the best Good luck x

Op. I had pretty much similar experience. I was booked in for cervical stitch surgery within 72 hours of my scan.
Its a relatively simple procedure, you're numbed from the legs down but kept awake. You'll be scanned before and after the procedure. You'll be surrounded by a team of people from anaesthetist to a midwife, the actual surgery took less than 10 minutes.

You'll get the stitch removed at 36 to 37 weeks and they'll keep you in for 24 hours to see if you go into labour. Again, all very straightforward.

They're giving you a stitch because of the risk of premature labour with your cervix shortening.

Please don't worry, the surgery is very straightforward and you'll be surrounded by a team of people during it, there was 10 people in the room when I had mine x

Just seen your update xxx so glad you've had it xx sorry would help if I read!

wellygang6 · 12/09/2023 20:42

@himlah try not to worry. I had one too and was terrified but it worked brilliantly and it came out at 37 weeks and then I ended up going overdue. They are brilliant.

Mufflette · 12/09/2023 21:03

@himlah the stitch is in now so you'll be ok. Be prepared for some spotting at points, it's normal but maternity assessment will still see you if you're worried.

I had mine in at I think 23 weeks, out at 36 (super quick and painless) and DS arrived safely at (just) 38 weeks. I didn't do bed rest, just limited how much I walked or stood up so there wasn't too much pressure on my cervix for long.

DS is now a very busy 1 yr old and I'm delighted to not have to have any more conversations about my cervix ☺️ I'm sure that will be you next year!

Just woken up to your responses. Thank you so much! I'm so pleased to hear you were able to have your babies to pretty much term. The doctors did not seem so confident with me and were unsure they could do the stitch - but luckily it was a success. They did note ' sludge' in my amniotic fluid also, has anybody else had this? We're back home now.

I've been given antibiotics and a twice daily 400mg of progesterone. I was told I did not need to do bed rest, just take it easy and no heavy lifting or sex.

Sending a big hug to those who weren't able to get the procedure in time. I can only imagine what that must have felt like Flowers

I still don't feel very confident and I'm just scared I could go into labour any second :-(

I had an emergency stitch at 21 weeks - cervix even shorter than yours (had pretty much disappeared on the scans) and doctors were very worried they wouldn't be able to do the stitch. I was put onto bed rest and then abotu 28 weeks told I could move around a bit more. My waters went at 28+4 and I was kept in hospital until I went into labour at 29+5. My daughter is completely healthy and doing great. It's a stressful time but just try and take every day as it comes. Good luck.

himlah · 13/09/2023 13:16

@GingerKombucha wow! How scary for you! I'm so pleased your daughter is healthy and doing well 🩷

I've been told not to do bed rest, but I feel like I want to anyway. I have a toddler so impossible to not lift anything :(

How stressful! Hold on to the fact that it's great that they discovered it when they did and have put the stitch in successfully. My daughter was born at 25 weeks after silent dilation to 3cm and prolapsed membranes. My only warning was a grain of rice sized bit of blood a few hours before. But despite a rough nicu ride, that baby is now a fit and healthy 13 year old!

I had a trans abdominal cerclage fitted before I fell pregnant with my next baby, who was born incident free at term.

Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy, all fingers crossed that your baby stays put!
