Hello, what would you recommend are essential to get for a baby born end of November? We have about 10 long sleeved sleepsuits, 10 short sleeve bodysuits, 6 ‘daytime’ outfits and 2 cardigans in newborn size, and then 0-3 months we have 7 long sleeved sleep suits, 5 short sleeve bodysuits, 2 outfits and a cardigan. This is our first baby so help is appreciated!

That will be plenty. People will buy you lots more. If you're like me, you will quickly lose interest in putting a newborn into anything resembling an outfit.

I would get a pramsuit in 0-3 if you think you'll be doing many walks in the pram (obvs can't be worn in the car seat) and then accessories i.e warm hat for outdoors, lots of muslins and bibs.

Other than long and short sleeve vests, socks. mine slept better with cosy toes so I would sometimes pop a pair on on top of baby grow.
We also had hats, mittens and, something else mine wore a lot because we were out everyday, a snow suit.

If you're in UK like me, a puffy warm pramsuit/ all in one / snowsuit thingy so you can get outside on cold days ( I had a December baby) and they can be warm and snuggly

thank you. I will be getting a pram suit and we have socks, muslins, mittens and hats. Most of the sleep suits have mittens/feet already.

Yep built in feet and hands are the best. If you do decide to buy anymore sleepsuits, the ones with the zips are the absolute best. Especially for when they're first born and you have to change their nappy every five minutes/undress them for the midwife

With newborn, look at the size/weight guide too. My children at 8lb or so at birth and were too big for newborn clothes and went straight into 0-1 months. 0-3 months was too big though. Otherwise sounds like you have loads, although I’d probably get another (bigger) cardigan. Pram suit is key for winter babies if you are likely to walk outside etc.

A baby sleeping bag is a good idea. Stops them kicking a blanket off and getting cold. Make sure it's the correct tog, obvs.

You’ll likely find you won’t bother with outfits in the first few months, just sleepsuits. I’d maybe get a few more cardis as they tend to spit up on their clothes. Avoid ones with hoods as it can pull on their necks when lying down.

A Tuppance & Crumble star suit. They are fleece and wrap over without fastenings, so are really handy for easily getting off and on. They are also safe to use in a car seat as they are thin. We had loads of pram suits for our December baby but mainly used the star suit.

Mine (one boy, one girl) both spent much of their first few months in these:

It makes the frequent nappy changes much easier as you're not dealing with loads of fiddly poppers all the time!

We used a baby grow in the fleece material a lot! Next sell them! We also bought this sleeping bag as it’s for babies from 7lb+

I would get a pramsuit for an end of november baby in 1 month for the first few weeks. Then decide whether to replace with 0-3 or a 3-6 one depending on how quickly they grow.
I probably wouldn't bother with a sleeping bag just yet, swaddle them with a blanket in the early weeks and figure out if they like it. Lots of babies love to be swaddles but some don't, then you can decide whether to try a prewrapped zip swaddle, or an arm out sleeping bag.

I would probably get an extra 2 cardigans in 0-3, baby is likely to be wearing a cardigan most of the time even at home.

And knitted hats.

Hufflepods · 07/09/2023 09:00

I also think you're going to need more than 7 sleepsuits and 5 vests in 0-3, particularly for a winter baby! You're going to be washing all the time with that number and it can be harder to get things dry in the colder months.
I wouldn't necessarily rush out and buy more now though, 0-3 is a common size for presents so wait until the baby is actually here and then order another packet of sleepsuits and vests when you need them.

DuploTrain · 07/09/2023 09:04

Agree wait and see what people give you - you can pick up emergency baby grows at the supermarket if you’re close to running out.

My top tip is wash at 30 and try to avoid tumble drying where possible… baby clothes shrink a lot because they’re so little to start with. And then you’ll be amazed that the baby has grown out of them after one wear 😅

Cloth dribble bibs are handy.

Hello, I am having a November baby and I am wondering what fabric should I buy sleepsuit? Is cotton too cold for November/December? Shall I think about velour?
