First response tests positive but no line progression?

Hey there. I’ve been doing frer tests, but have no line progression. The darker one is yesterday (11 dpo) then today is 12 dpo but lighter? Both are first morning urine. Thoughts? Or are these evaps? Thought they’d be getting darker if it were a viable pregnancy? thanks

You're still very early, I'd give it a couple of days before testing again if you can, as hard as it is to not test, these were my first response tests at 12dpo and 14dpo, no difference between the two, I didn't get a stronger line until the following week and the clear blue was done at 15dpo

It takes around 48 hours for hcg to rise so you won’t see progression testing every day. Even then progression isn’t guaranteed. My frer got lighter between 11dpo and 14dpo, I’m now 33 weeks so it really doesn’t mean anything

noaddedsugarx · 05/09/2023 09:39

I would say there's a good chance it's a chemical. I know people say there's no line progression in 24 hours but FRERs are so sensitive you can usually see a difference. My tests were definitely noticeably darker each day and these ones pick up such a low hcg I'd expect them to be darker at this stage.

Have you done one this morning to compare? I hope I'm wrong and it works out x

RubyNZ · 06/09/2023 00:26

This is encouraging. However I’m feeling not too hopeful! Took a test just after I posted this and it came back fully positive! Took one the next morning (fmu) and very light again. What a trip. Thinking it’s a chemical but hoping somehow it isn’t. We will see

That’s crazy that it got lighter! I’m quite surprised it went on to be successful with that. Thanks for this :)

@RubyNZ here’s mine. I was convinced I was losing her. Also had a bleed at 9 weeks also convinced me I was losing her. Now she’s wriggling away in there. @noaddedsugarx Yes frer are sensitive but it still takes time for your body to create more hcg, it’s not possible for any test to get darker when your body hasn’t had enough time to increase the hcg levels. Even frer don’t get darker every day.

@PickledScrump wow! I am quite surprised by this. That would have freaked me out too but I’m so so happy things worked out for you. That bleed must have given you a second fright too. Thanks for this. Gonna go and get some bloods done. Only way to really know! Appreciate your response

@annlee3817 also sorry, I didn’t realise you had to tag in this? I don’t use this platform much. Think my response before replied to you but I didn’t tag you? Haha. Anyway thanks for responding!

Where can you buy these FRER tests? Ive read on here they’ve been discontinued this year and most shops don’t sell them anymore other than Amazon..

noaddedsugarx · 06/09/2023 07:32

@PickledScrump mine did get darker every day so i'm just going from my experience the way you're going from yours. I just think generally the line would be darker by now and if we're being honest tests getting lighter are not usually a good sign. I've had 2 chemicals before so I know how they go. Honestly, I would've been worried if I'd had your tests too but I'm glad things are okay. I think maybe you are the exception.

PickledScrump · 06/09/2023 07:44

@noaddedsugarx its not experience it’s how the human body works. Hcg rises around every 48 hours so that’s how long it takes to see a difference in tests at least. That’s why blood tests are done 48 hours apart, even though more sensitive than urine tests they still can’t pick up a change every day

noaddedsugarx · 06/09/2023 08:06

@PickledScrump yes they can because it's literally happened to me! hcg DOUBLES every 48 hours but it still rises every day by about 24% which means it is possible to see a change in home pregnancy tests, albeit very slight. They recommend bloods every 48 hours to check for doubling but if they did them every 24 it doesn't mean it would stay the exact same! I have a friend who tested every single day from getting her positive until she was around 6 weeks. they definitely got darker by the day.

RubyNZ · 06/09/2023 08:28

@noaddedsugarx @PickledScrump thanks for both your stories. I’m sure they are both true (2 things can be true at once!) I appreciate both sides. It’s a way to keep things realistic.

@Cressie2 I’m in NZ and they are sold everywhere here. Not sure about other countries!

@PickledScrump I think you're misunderstanding how HCG rises. It doesn't just stay constant for 47 hours then suddenly doubles. HCG will be constantly rising but the numbers will approximately double over the course of around 48 hours. Therefore 48 hours is a good marker and testing with this gap will indicate whether the numbers appear to be doubling and the pregnancy looks viable. Of course there will still be progression and increase in HCG levels each day but the 48 hours is just a good medical marker to look for that doubling of numbers. People do see progression on pregnancy tests, especially sensitive ones, after 24 hours but waiting another day can make that progression more obvious.

@RubyNZ There are so many things that can impact the darkness of a line and I actually found the afternoons produced a darker line for me. I hope everything works out for you.

noaddedsugarx · 06/09/2023 08:55

@RubyNZ no worries. that's true :) i'm not saying it never works out and obviously it has for some posters on here which is amazing. Of course you will be more likely to have an idea of what's going on if you compare your tests over a few days. I'm keeping everything crossed for you x

PickledScrump · 06/09/2023 08:56

@sugarplum33 i am very much aware of how it works thanks. I have never once said it stays the same for 47 hours and then jumps up. As I have said 48 hours is how long you should wait between tests to see progression. A pp said it’s likely to be a chemical as it hasn’t progressed in 24hours and that is a really cruel thing to say as far as I’m concerned as in 24 hours it’s just too early to expect to see progression. In the early stages, which OP is, the rise is really minimal so 48 hours should be the minimum to see even a slight change.

@RubyNZ i really hope everything works out well for you. Remember it is still early so although hcg doubles it’s still low numbers at the moment so you really do need a couple of days to see the difference. Bloods will be a lot more accurate for you xx

sugarplum33 · 06/09/2023 09:14

@PickledScrump No you didn't directly say that but every point in your previous post was incorrect and suggested that there is only progression after, not within, 48 hours. You are telling people that FRER don't get darker everyday but that is simply your own experience and not that of many other women.

"Hcg rises around every 48 hours so that’s how long it takes to see a difference in tests at least."
Nope, HCG doubles around every 48 hours, it rises constantly. It's very possible to see visible daily line progression.

"That’s why blood tests are done 48 hours apart, even though more sensitive than urine tests they still can’t pick up a change every day"
Yes they can and will pick up a change everyday, but they are completed 48 hours apart to look for the doubling of HCG numbers.

I'm all for reassuring OP and certainly a lack of line profession within 24 hours isn't a reason alone to think that the pregnancy is not going to work out, but you're posting a information based on your own single experience which simply isn't correct.

noaddedsugarx · 06/09/2023 09:18

@PickledScrump but you made out it was impossible to see hcg progression if bloods were done after 24 hours?

I don't think it was cruel. I think it's crueller giving people false hope which I see people do constantly on here. Perhaps I should have worded it differently to say in my experience when my tests were like this it was a chemical. I appreciate it's very early still and comparing tests with a 24 hour gap between them isn't ideal. That's why I asked if OP had tested since. I'm hardly being cruel, I've said multiple times I really hope it works out. If it was me I would appreciate view points from both perspectives too.

RubyNZ · 06/09/2023 10:29

@PickledScrump @noaddedsugarx I really appreciate both sides of the story! You’ve both had very different experiences. I appreciate you not giving me false hope. I also appreciate a positive story. Let’s leave it there - you’ve both got validity to your points and perhaps they were both misinterpreted slightly. That’s allgood - thanks for your knowledge. I’ll do a blood test and that should sort it out :) Thanks to you both. Good luck on both of your parenting journeys ❤️
