3+ glucose on urine test

Hi all, just wanted to get some thoughts on here! I just had my 32 week appointment and my urine glucose came back as 3+. I was really surprised, have had so many urine tests at other appointments (last one about a month ago) and has never been a problem. I do not have any gestational diabetes risk factors.

For context, I have just come back from a holiday in the states and flew overnight the night before last and did not sleep at all, and then was very jet lagged last night, so have had about 7 hours sleep in the last 48 hours.

I had special K and some squash for breakfast before the test, but usually have that sort of thing for breakfast and it has not impacted any other urine tests.

Anyone experienced this? I would like to have the GTT test, but have been told to wait for a gestational diabetes appointment at the hospital and will have to measure blood sugar for 2 weeks.

It seems strange that they have wanted to do a gestational diabetes test first rather than monitoring your blood sugar.

I have the test done 3 times in my last pregnancy and it was mainly down to what I was eating and drinking before my appointments. Outwith getting the tests I was having to check my urine 3 times a week at home and send in the results to just double check it all. They might ask you to do this for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for responding Hiddenvoice. I think they are going to monitor the blood pressure first, but I have to attend the gestational diabetes session in order to be shown how to monitor and then that will determine whether I have it? I assume that's the approach.

The midwife did not ask me what I had had to eat and drink before the test, but I always drink a litre of liquid in the morning, and that morning I had had a litre of squash and that is all I had had to drink, so perhaps that is why my urine had so much sugar in it.

Blood glucose! Not blood pressure haha

The midwife didn’t ask me the first two times, it was only the third time and I said I had squash too.

I had to go without any food from 10pm the night before, get my bloods done first thing in the morning and drink a glucose shot. Then returned 2 hours later to repeat the test. They were able to tell me pretty quickly that it was negative and to avoid sugary things before my midwife appointments.

That's encouraging, thanks Hiddenvoice. I would really like to have the GTT test but unfortunately I have been told that I am too far along as that test can only be done up to 28 weeks. I am blood glucose monitoring at home and my fasting blood sugar seems fine (around 4.2) but I have had one high result after eating a carby meal (8.2) and then tested and had glucose in urine. It seems to me like my normal blood sugar is okay but can be overwhelmed with excess carbs/sugar?

I am quite stressed about this and am not finding the hospital very clear or helpful!

Hi, I am in a similar position to you, had my 32 week midwife appointment on Monday and she said there was ++ glucose in my urine. I had also had a sugary breakfast that day.

she booked me in for the GTT which I have got tomorrow at 8:30am and I am really hoping I do not have it I have been so stressed and anxious 😞 I hope you find some clear answers soon!

Hi OP. I had GD in both of my pregnancies. With my first, my urine showed glucose and was sent for a GTT. I had no risk factors at all for GD. I failed the GTT by only a small margin. I then was shown how to monitor my blood sugars and advised on diet. My fasting sugars were always within range and luckily I never had to go onto medication. However, I could only tolerate a small amount of carbs, and only if I had them alongside protein. I couldn't have any carbs for breakfast as it would spike my blood sugar readings. I recommend joining the Gestational Diabetes Facebook page. The advice and support on there is fab and really helped me.

That’s strange that they’ve said that, I had my last gtt test done at 36 weeks. Usually they don’t test until you’re around 24-26 weeks then can pretty much test until birth- is what I was told.

It might be that you can only tolerate smaller amounts of carbs and sugars.

Hi Kam. Thank you for sharing your experience, I also do not have any GD risk factors so was a real surprise. At all of my appointments my midwives have been really complementary on having no risk factors at all for pregnancy and have been telling me how simple my pregnancy is, and then all of a sudden that all changed with the glucose in the urine. Sounds weird but I suddenly feel like I have lost something and my confidence is really low and anxiety very high. I have joined the facebook page which seems like a really helpful community.

Hiddenvoice, thank you for the GTT details, I will call the midwife advice line again and see what they say.

My fasting readings have all been 4.2 so they seem okay. My lunch readings have been within range (eg. 7.4, that was after a bagel with butter, an apple and an oreo). It's my evening meals that have been an issue - after paneer curry and naan with a glass of squash it was 8.2. Not sure where i stand really.

As someone who's only risk factor of Gestational diabetes was that my sister had it (she has polycystic ovaries so higher insulin resistance), had no glucose in my urine even after I had my GTT.
I was on the boarder line for diagnosis (cut of 7.8 and mine was 7.8) my baby was growing small due to GD and how it affects the placenta.

I would treat as though you had GD. 8.2 is a high reading post food. GD isn't anything that your do wrong. It's just the placenta affecting hormones.

I ended up requiring weekly scans due to this. Born at 37+6 weighing 5lb 7oz xx
