Tiny haematoma but lots of bleeding??

Hello,

I just had an early scan at 5 weeks 4 days this morning because I'm higher risk for ectopic. Everything was fine, they even saw the heartbeat which was unexpected. We were so delighted.

They also picked up a tiny 0.5mm haematoma. They said it might bleed at some point in the future.

This afternoon, I started bleeding. Although the haematoma is tiny I keep getting big patches of blood on tissue, a few centimetres wide. I phoned the EPU and they said it's probably the haematoma and that small ones can bleed more than you'd think and keep refilling due to being near a vessel. Has anyone else come across this before??

We were utterly devastated to have a miscarriage back in June after ttc for 2 years. We were heartbroken and it started the same way (though at 8.5 weeks). Small patches of red blood. Last time they said it was probably a haematoma and it wasn't so I don't feel I can rest easy now.

Man this is hard. We could hardly believe our luck getting pregnant again so quickly after the first one took so long. I'm 40 in a week's time, we're meant to set off for a birthday trip tomorrow but I don't know if I can now.

Maybe no one has experience of this exact scenario but just wish I'd hear from someone. Finding it so hard....

Hello lovely, how are you feeling today? Hoping I can offer reassurance here. TW though, loss of pregnancies will be discussed and descriptive blood loss.

I experienced 5 losses before I fell pregnant with my twin girls. I had the absolute heaviest bleeds I have ever experienced throughout that pregnancy. One at 6 weeks, one at 10 weeks, one at 18 and one at 22 weeks. All of which where haemotomas. They where very heavy. To the point that I would stand up and it would be like a puddle (so sorry for the tmi) I remember crying and my ex husband carrying me to the toilet as I was sure the worst had happened. The worst one was at 22 weeks. It just didn't stop bleeding. I remember being in the car on the way to the hospital talking to my girls asking them to be safe and to keep moving. I went to get scans each time to check and each time it was just one of my babies kicking the blood spots and making them pop. It's still scary and that fear never leaves but keep strong. Make sure you get scanned regularly for peace of mind but also go easy on yourself. You're brave and I'm sending huge hugs! My girls have now just turned 7 Xx

Thank you so much, that's really kind of you. I'm so glad things turned out well for you and your girls. Bleeding has calmed down over night but still getting brown spotting. Keeping hopeful. x

Can you get in for a scan? Just to ease your mind? Brown spotting is normal for heomotomas too. Just don't be hard on yourself. You're allowed to be worried or scared. Never let the doctors or nurses make you feel like you're going insane. Your little bundle of joy is everything to you and if you need a scan to feel safe then you deserve a scan! I'm always here if you have any questions or experience anything else and I can offer reassurance but I highly recommend getting yourself in just to be checked. You've got this mumma!!

Hi @CCrowe

I experienced something similar. I had a heavy bleed (large clots) around 6-7 weeks and was told by my GP that it sounded like a miscarriage. However the heavy bleeding stopped almost as quickly as it started and I was just spotting and wiping light blood. I assumed a miscarriage would have continued to bleed heavily so I booked a private scan as I wanted confirmation one way or another. I was pretty shocked when they found a heart beat. I managed to then be seen by my EPU who scanned me and found a subchorionic hematoma. I continued to spot and have light blood everytime I wiped up until I was around 13 weeks.

I know how scary it is but I hope this may reassure you a little that it can all work out well. I went on to have a pretty normal pregnancy and thankfully gave birth full term to a healthy DD. I really do hope everything does work out well for you too! x

I had a subchorionic haematoma with my DD. Bled a lot around the 7 week mark for a few days, but otherwise everything worked out fine for us. She just turned 4 today.

Whilst anything can happen at this stage, I would try to believe what they say until you have evidence otherwise. If you are under 6 weeks they may not be able to see a huge amount by scanning.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes they wouldn't do another scan because I'd literally just had one the morning before the bleed in the afternoon. I appreciate there's only so much they could get form scanning again so quickly. The bleeding has stopped now so we're going to keep hopeful and get another scan later on. x
