Potential infection after C section? Super worried!

Hi mummies,
im looking for some advice! I had a c section 4 weeks today! For the past week or two I’ve been having a fever and been either super chilly with like 4 blankets or super sweaty where I’m literally dripping! I also feel super weak and if I don’t keep on top of paracetamol and ibuprofen then I get double vision and feel dizzy. My incision looks all okay! Discharge I can’t really say, it’s very little blood now but it’s SUPER dark and (TMI) doesn’t obviously smell the best 😅 my question is could this be a potential internal infection or just a very long flu? My boobs don’t have any redness or tenderness so I don’t think it’s mastitis.
my doctors are never available and I just can’t go to a&e and as I’m all alone with two small kids. I don’t know who to contact or what to do

Phone 111 now.

Hufflepods · 01/09/2023 14:01

Do you not have anyone who could look after your kids while you seek help? Their dad? Your mum? A friend? Having fevers doesn’t sound very conducive to looking after a baby and a young child!

Sirrah · 01/09/2023 14:01

Please seek medical help immediately!

sm40 · 01/09/2023 14:05

Please seek help. Could lead to sepsis.

MariaVT65 · 01/09/2023 14:08

I thought you were still supposed to be under the hospital’s care for 6 weeks? Definitely call your postnatal ward or 111 immediately.

Tiredmomma01 · 01/09/2023 16:58

I have no one😅 all friends are far away too. I just feel like surely I wouldn’t have an infection 4 weeks in? I thought it would happen sooner

Might not be your scar? You could just be ill, but would get checked out. Looking after your kids if you get more poorly will be even harder!

TeaKitten · 01/09/2023 17:12

Phone 111 or the post natal ward, a phone call won’t cause any harm! If you have noone else at all it’s even more important you don’t risk letting yourself get more unwell, your kids need you.

Some infections take longer to take hold. Are you still under the care of a midwife? At least call them, it's really not worth the risk.

Tiredmomma01 · 01/09/2023 17:24

That’s the thing I’m not sure, they never said I can call or anything but everyone keeps telling me that I can up until 6 weeks so I guess I should atleast try

I had an infection several weeks pp. You need to see medical help urgently.

gstv2104 · 01/09/2023 17:27

Sepsis has been on the increase throughout the uk and can be fatal. Symptoms are flu like, fever etc. Seek medical advice now OP

gstv2104 · 01/09/2023 17:28

Just to add I'm currently 5 weeks pp via c section and midwife was really firm on phoning if these symptoms occurred!

Namechangedforthis25 · 01/09/2023 17:31

I hope you are kidding when you say you can’t have an infection 4 weeks in- of course you can

I did! At 6 weeks. Second C-section too. Thought I was fine, then had a little bit of redness of scar - then the next morning I couldn’t even lift my neck to get baby - it was like I was on the operating table again. Called 111 and they called an ambulance - these were during the strikes - the ambulance arrived in 6 minutes.as I was just outside the 6 week window Went to A&E - infection. Needed antibiotics - luckily not IV. Had an ultrasound.

this was earlier this year.

as you are in the six week window - you should be able to get seen quicker: pls find someone to look after your kids or take them. Or call 111 and see what they do.

sepsis kills….quickly

clearly what you are going through isn’t normal

iamthattree · 01/09/2023 17:32

Saw this in active and came to say gp or 111 pls. I had exactly this 14 years ago (I still remember vividly) and it was 4/5 weeks after birth.

It was a really awful infection that had me on the edge of sepsis. My gp sent me to a&e (they had a gynae a&e which was accessed via the usual one).

I didn't have to stay in or anything as they just caught it but I was sent home with the most fuck off anti biotics they could and had to go back in for check ups.

Take the baby if you must but you must go in.

Ahnobother · 01/09/2023 17:33

Seek urgent medical help. I had a c section infection two weeks after my first baby and was re admitted to the maternity hospital along with her and given IV antibiotics.

I also had similar after my second and needed more antibiotics. Cause of both was a weak area in my skin.

If you have a trust worthy neighbour / friend or anyone you can leave your baby with do. Or ask one of them to come with you to the hospital urgently in the event that you are unable to mind your baby.

Did you phone for help?

MiraculousLadybird · 01/09/2023 20:51

I had an infection and was readmitted at 17 days post partum. I was admitted via the postnatal ward as I was still under their care. I could take the baby in with me but had to get childcare for my older ones, it wasn't ideal but it's an emergency.

nevynevster · 01/09/2023 20:54

I also had a terrible infection post elective C. I didn't realise these symptoms were an infection and had to be readmitted with IV antibiotics in the end. You need to contact GP or 111 urgently to determine whether it can be treated with oral antibiotics or whether you need IV. If IV you can be admitted with your newborn but not with the other child so is there someone who can mind your other baby temporarily for a day or two? Good luck

Treesnbirds · 01/09/2023 20:58

I really hope you're ok. Please get checked tonight as better safe than sorry ESPECIALLY if you're alone with your children. Sending ❤️

Tiredmomma01 · 02/09/2023 01:27

So after sorting out childcare I’m finally in a&e, postnatal ward didn’t even entertain the idea and sent me straight here anyway. Waiting for bloods to be back, all doctor did was feel my stomach and said it’s soft and he said he doesn’t think an infection can start so late after a c section 🤦🏼‍♀️ he’s clearly not a gynae

Hope you’re ok! Keep us updated!

Ahnobother · 02/09/2023 11:52

Glad you went in @MariaVT65 - it's hard to know what's right or wrong when your body has just given birth but I hope you get the right treatment soon and that you get home soon to your children too.
Best wishes for your newly expanded family.

Tiredmomma01 · 03/09/2023 11:27

They said there’s some kind of infection but they think urine infection even though I have NO symptoms but I got antibiotics. Also said something about my kidney function and to drink plenty but tbh, the antibiotics haven’t helped yet and it’s 4 times a day for 3 days so may have to go back 😅

Super late to this post, but I hope you are OK now! I had a postpartum infection after a C section, and it lingered for 14 weeks after she was born due to the incompetence of my GP and A&E. DD is now 7 months old, and I haven't felt right since. So, if you are having any symptoms persisting please be pushy! ❤️ xx
