I was rearranging the furniture in my classroom and as I lifted up a stack of chairs I felt this twinge of pain in my tummy, almost like a sharp stab. For the past few hours I've been feeling crappy especially around my upper stomach. Im worried I've caused damage and it's too early to even see baby on a scan. Should I be worried?

It is very unlikely you caused any damage by lifting anything.
The pain is probably just a muscle.
And the upper stomach has no relation to the uterus, so it is unlikely the pain is even related to the pregnancy at all.

Of course you could call 111 for reassurance, or your GP. Or even your local EPU.

@slouisecar Try not to worry. You'll experience lots of pains like this along the way, sometimes when you're only getting up from the sofa. You're body is stretching so much already inside preparing for your growing baby and so it's probably just round ligament pain. Take it easy though and get checked out if the pain doesn't ease x

Really don't worry, I've been doing home renovations throughout. It's very well protected in there.

What do you mean by crappy? Your baby is teeny tiny and will be fine. I was hefting my 3 stone older child around in early pregnancy with my second.

Sorry I meant crampy! Autocorrect!

In the past most women wouldn’t even have known they were pregnant so early and were probably working in laundries, in fields, carrying children, lifting patients up, etc.

Glitterb · 30/08/2023 14:07

This was the only symptom I had of being pregnant, I lifted something heavy and felt the most bizarre pain and it made me do a test. You will be fine, at 4 weeks the baby is really tiny and protected.

Cowlover89 · 30/08/2023 14:09

Baby will be fine.

AnneLovesGilbert · 30/08/2023 14:11

Ah I get you! It’s normal to feel all sorts of things in early pregnancy, you’re hyper aware of your body and your joints are relaxing with the hormones pumping through your system. Try not to worry. It’s shit how slowly time passes when you’ve got such a big change happening to you and no one knows about it. Rest when you can.

Endofsummerisinsight · 30/08/2023 14:13

The issue with lift heavy things is because towards the end of pregnancy your ligaments become softer and you can do damage to yourself. It’s not going to damage the baby.

Hufflepods · 30/08/2023 14:20

You'll be fine, think of all the women who lift heavy older children daily.

There isn't really a risk to the baby when lifting during pregnancy.

Spottypineapple · 30/08/2023 14:31

You've pulled a muscle, nothing to do with baby.

I was deadlifting upwards of 80kg into my third trimester with DD1.

Now carting around a two year old and 32 weeks pregnant.

It's a total myth that lifting is bad in pregnancy as long as you do it properly, engage core, lift with your legs etc (which applies when not pregnant anyway)

Screwballs · 30/08/2023 14:44

I got a massive cramp getting out the bath, its just your womb stretching that you may have helped along but you'll be doing yourself no favours getting in flaps about every little thing like this. The body does what the body does, relax, woman have been having babies thousands of years.

TTCbaby2023 · 30/08/2023 16:11

I think it is very unlikely you would have done any damage at this point.

PickledScrump · 30/08/2023 17:55

The risk of heavy lifting is injury to yourself as relaxin is released and loosens everything ready for labour, this doesn’t happen at the beginning. Your baby is very safe inside and is low in your pelvis. Sounds like you’ve pulled a stomach muscle if you have pain at the top

This. Lifting is a risk to you, not the baby.
