Hi All,

could anyone share their experiences of giving birth at St Mary’s in Manchester? In particular, which of the three sites you gave birth on and why you chose that site?
I have the choice of St Mary’s or another hospital and I don’t think the other one is a good option for me.

thank you!

My nearest hospital is St Marys at Wythenshawe. I am yet to have a reason to not want too give birth there. The Midwife Led Unit is in the same building/almost next door to the delivery ward if required which reduces a lot of concern about travel is something were to happen. The MLU also has a water pool in every room which is a massive selling point to me.

I was given a choice of st marys and wythenshawe and chose wythenshawe as it has a new birth centre and some of my friends have had happy births there.

I went through ivf at st Mary's and didn't like the hospital / team as much x

I gave birth at Wythenshawe they were incredibly busy and a little hectic (ward was full so never made it there)! But the staff were lovely and I had a pleasant experience. I'd go back there if I have another

Sorry should have clarified - St. Mary's in Manchester I didn't like. Wythenshawe still falls under St. Mary's

I’ve had two babies at St Mary’s and both have had good levels of care. It was hectic and you don’t have much continuity, if that matters to you, but me and babies have all been safe and looked after.

St Mary on Oxford Road is too busy. The building and birthing suites themselves are really lovely, but it’s too hectic, there is no continuity of care, appointments don’t run to time. I’ve chosen to go the Wythenshaw with my second and so far it’s a better experience. I didn’t even contemplate Stepping Hill.

It is v busy. With both of my births they kept telling me to stay at home when I was in labour and really needed to be in. But once I was the cafe was good. Any appointments I’ve had at Wythenshawe have been a lot calmer.

I had my baby at St Mary’s Wythenshawe and I would 100% recommend. From the antenatal care, the triage care down to labour and delivery, I honestly couldn’t fault any of it. Such lovely midwives and nurses. I would choose there every time!

Thanks everyone, thats all really helpful. Wythenshawe seems like the way to go! I wanted a calmer environment but the safety of obstetric led if it becomes necessary. Thank you 💕

@Sarah2707 what were your options x

FluffyKitty007 · 08/12/2023 12:32

I also have to choose and I'm only 4 weeks!

Wythenshawe is 40 min drive vs Oxford Road 15-20min and the North General Hospital about the same distance. I heard negative opinions about the last one so I think it will have to be Oxford Road, despite it being busy. 40 min sounds a bit too far?
