Two hour glucose test.

Hi all, I have to do a two hour glucose tolerance test this week and am absolutely dreading it. The lab opens at 8am so I’ll need to fast until around 10am. Even when I’m not pregnant I struggle to get past 9am without eating as I get lightheaded etc, but it’s so much worse in pregnancy and I feel faint if I don’t eat - so I’m not sure I’ll actually be able to go through with the test. Thinking a big ish meal around 9pm the night before might help see me through - any ideas on what I should eat to keep me full? Or other tips for the test?

Didn’t have GD in my first pregnancy but had a large baby (4.5kg). Passed the non-fasting one hour GD test twice in that pregnancy but it’s been suggested I go straight to the two hour one this time.

Take a book. It’s a very long wait as you can’t really walk around much in order for them to get a accurate reading. I almost dosed off!
just knock the drink back as quick as you can because it’s grim!

you’re ok to drink water before.

Have snacks in your bag for the way home. You are lucky that yours is early in the day. When I did mine I had a 2pm appt so was teaching all morning before driving 29 miles to the hospital. Keep yourself distracted and you will be ok. Remember that you are doing this for you and your baby!

Similar to @niclw . I taught 35 Reception children all morning before my 2pm appt. I ate a very large carb heavy meal at 8pm.

I found drinking and drinking and drinking water was the thing that abated my hunger as much as possible. But I was still starving!

If there's no other reason to believe you may have GD other than 'you had a large baby the first time' then you're also perfectly within your rights to decline the test x

I had to do this test with both my pregnancies. I hated it both times, and I was starving when I got out both times too. I took my knitting and an audiobook, and got a fair bit of my knitting projects done while waiting. Distraction is essential I think. And snacks for on the way home.

I had my test this morning at 9am, finished at 11:05am.

Honestly, I was dreading it due to all the comments of the drink being “horrible” and due to my own fears of blood tests. I used to be terrible, would require someone to hold me during the process… embarrassing but true.

The whole process was so easy and simple. Not worth a fuss at all! The drink was surprisingly nice. Slightly thicker texture but tasted like a mix between flat sprite and a capri sun. Maybe because I was hungry I enjoyed it more? The blood tests were very quick and easy. I requested to have extra blood taken due to my cardiologists needing a sample for themselves.

Honestly, do not worry. Stop eating from 10pm the night before and get some sleep. I actually stopped eating around 8pm and had a very early night, waking up at 6am.

I recommend you do pack something to munch on afterwards. I am lucky as my hospital is right opposite some cafes, so just sat in there now waiting for my full english!
