Pregnant whilst being a student nurse

Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone has/is a student nurse whilst being pregnant? I just found out I'm pregnant and doing the nursing apprenticeship. My due date is in May 2024, but I'm due to qualify in the October 2024.

I know it sounds a bit crazy, but would it be possible to continue with the apprenticeship? I just don't want to quit with so few months between the time I would have the baby and qualifying.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

I'm in my 3rd year, there have been a lot of women on the course get pregnant. All of the ones I have know have taken a year out and then returned or plan to return at the same place they left off.
Each year weve had some new people join our cohort who had started a year earlier but took a year out for having their babies. They fit in easily and haven't had any problems so far with having had a year out.

We have a lot of limitations on which placements you can go on if your pregnant, especially nearer to a due date because of insurance and risk assessments. My friend wanted to go right through without taking a pause but she still had to make up missed placement hours afterwards even though she could manage the theory, so it still delayed her graduation and gave her quite a lot of stress when she also had a newborn to look after.
It might be easier on the apperenticeship route though.

Thanks guys, yh I would really be considering taking some time out, but at that point I would only have 5 months left so I really don't know what to do. I would only be having A 5 week placement and a 12 week placement during that period, and the 12 week one would be the one just before I qualify.

I just want it done if I'm honest, but not sure if the uni will let me carry on :/

Not quite the same but I did my last year of my social work degree pregnant. Found out in the November, then had her in the July. My course ended end of May though. I was on placements so I just had to make sure there were risk assessments in place.

It's not the being pregnant part that's difficult for me, It's the fact that I'll still have another 5 months to do whilst having a new born. I guess if I were to put the course on hold even for 6 months, it wouldn't be the worse thing in the world. It's just a shame because I'm already in 3rd year and It's been dragging on for so long now

Im a nurse/mum and I would take a year out. Have a chat to your lead they will probably have a plan you have to follow anyway I doubt they will give you much of a choice. Often it’s not physically/mentally possible to be a nurse in that period post birth even if you have good childcare/shared parental leave. Id try not to have your last placement in the third trimester if it can be helped because it is mega tough working during that time. And make sure you advocate for yourself don’t do nights/limit long days/manual handling. Sometimes a team is really good at looking after their pregnant colleagues and sometimes not which is even less predictable when you are in a new team.

@Laura0589 I’m due may 2024 and my last placement would be end of July 2024, so I would have already had the baby by then. I was just wondering if it was possible to be able to finish the last 5 months of the course with a new born baby. I would qualify in October 2024
