Hi,

This is my 3rd baby and just found out I have low Papp A 0.28 mom I’ve not spoke to my midwife yet about it and I’m very worried after googling it!

I never had this in my last 2 pregnancy’s and had 2 x 8lb baby’s .

has anyone experienced this? And did you have any problems?

Hi @Louellie19 sorry you’re feeling worried, I’ve been there! I had low Papp A as well and my daughter was very small and early. On the other hand, my friend who also had the same, went to term and her wee girl was around 6lbs! It doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong or going to happen but it just means they will offer you growth scans so you’ll be in good hands and looked after 🥰

Hello, I had low papp-a. It's actually quite common as far as I can tell, and though it sounds scary, it's quite easily dealt with.
I was prescribed aspirin, had extra midwife appointments and growth scans. This was all very reassuring. Towards the end his growth tailed off and I was induced dead on 37 weeks. He was born at 6lb and is now coming up to 5 months. He's on the second percentile, so small, but perfectly healthy and full of energy!
Don't worry, everything will be fine. Good luck!

Thank you both so much for the reassuring replies! I have done a bit of crying tonight should not have googled 🙈

I had a low Papp-A score with DS2. I got extra scans (which was lovely!) and he was measuring so big they were suggesting a c-section. He came at 38+4 and was bang on average weight (3.5kg maybe? Can't remember!)

Don't google, and don't worry. You'll get extra care and with any luck it will not be necessary at all.

Louellie19 · 27/08/2023 22:50

@Thankyouthankyoujellybean that’s amazing ! Thank you. Just worried as my score seems really quite low ☹️ but it is reassuring I’ll get monitored more closely for it.

I had similar with DD, prescribed aspirin which I took throughout, didn’t have any extra scans or anything though. All went fine during pregnancy, DD got lazy as we got close to due date and I ended up being in for monitoring three or four times, but she arrived as planned (elective section for other reasons) and a good weight 3.75kg.

stopiwanttogetofff · 27/08/2023 23:02

My first baby was almost 9lbs and text book pregnancy no issues low risk

Second baby had low papp a of 0.34. Had high bp from 28 weeks, a few hospitalisations to restable my bp and alter meds. Baby came by emergency section at 37 weeks as had static growth and was transverse. He was just 6lbs but needed no help and is 6 months bow and had no issues whatever

Theres a good fb group you can join to hear stories

Thankyouthankyoujellybean · 27/08/2023 23:03

I remember reading some scary stats about the higher chance of stillbirth, but then realised that that was without monitoring or intervention. If you've read something terrifying, remember that it was written before you got pregnant with this baby who will have the benefit of all the most recent discoveries and treatments. Nobody suggested putting me on aspirin 4 years ago, and now it seems to be standard. Medicine is adapting all the time.

Confusedddddddd · 27/08/2023 23:05

I had low Papp-A at 0.3. It didn't affect us at all. The extra scans were great, but they were soooo wrong with their measurements.

I was pushed to be induced on my due date but due to short staffing was induced 40+1, she arrived the next day after an easy induction and a quick labour at 7lb12. I didn't think the induction was needed as she was perfectly happy in there, but it was strongly advised because of the low Papp-A. Placenta was all good too.

I've heard in some cases it does cause issues but in the majority it doesn't.

Louellie19 · 27/08/2023 23:26

Thank you for all the positive stories ! Suppose your mind just jumps to the worst. Will speak to my midwife tomorrow and see what she says going forward and also try to stay calm about it!

I spoke to the midwife this morning, she has put me down to see a consultant wants me to take 150mg of aspirin daily and I will need regular growth scans x

Glad you managed to speak to your midwife. I was in your position a few weeks ago and it knocked me tbh. Having had a bit more time, I’ve realised how common it is - three people at my work have partners who had low Papp-a! I don’t think it’s really spoken about much for us to know how common it really is.

All I would take from it is that any problems with your placenta will be picked up on with the extra growth scans, they start in the third trimester for a reason, any action needed will be taken so quickly. The vast majority of outcomes are so positive and there’s no reason why you or I will be any different x

mrsgtobe97 · 28/08/2023 18:25

I had this with my daughter 😊. Very common, you will take aspirin and get some extra scans which is always great. My daughter was born 5lbs 13oz at 39+2, perfectly healthy x

Louellie19 · 28/08/2023 18:46

@Goblet93 thank you, it has really knocked me as well I’ve cried more than I’m ashamed to admit! This is my 3rd pregnancy and I have never even heard of it before! It really should be talked about more than it is.

@mrsgtobe97 thank you, praying for the same outcome for my wee one! X

My son was born 8lb5 and never had issues. It was nice to have extra scans. And that was without me taking aspirin as the midwife forgot to tell me to take it 🤷🏻‍♀️Thankfully I have a more competent one this time around.

rainbowtea23 · 28/08/2023 20:36

I’ve also got it this time around. Didn’t have it with my first although I did end up with preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. Same as you OP on 150mg of aspirin. My midwife told me it wasn’t something they used to routinely test for until fairly recently when they introduced the combined screening. I’m coming up 27 weeks and my growth scans start week after next so be good to see how things are going and how accurate they’ll be. With my first he was estimated 6lb 11oz on the Monday and came out via emergency section a few days later at 6lb 10oz at 36 weeks so pretty accurate for me.

Goblet93 · 28/08/2023 21:05

@Louellie19 nothing to be ashamed of! Personally I felt finding out through a letter with a leaflet was hard without anyone to actually talk to at the time about it. This is my second and I had never heard of it either so you’re definitely not alone. Give yourself some time for it to sink in properly, feel all the feelings and I’d second the suggestion of the Facebook group - it certainly is much more positive and full of real life stories as opposed to google x

OuiLaLa · 28/08/2023 21:14

Had low Papp-a both pregnancies. DD was a normal, overdue baby who weighed about 8.5 pounds. She grew to the 92nd/98th centile beast until she was over 3 - thankfully she has settled down now.

My DS was early and small for totally unrelated reasons. He always measured bigger than he was on growth scans as he was long and skinny.

So for me it was not determinative. I think that is the case for lots of women and hope it is for you too! Good luck op.
