So I've read that it's safe to have 1 cup of coffee under 200mg caffine. I e been mainly having tea instead but have the odd cup of coffee, is this ok?

Tea also has caffeine in it so don't drink too much of that either, especially if you are still having a coffee! Look for some decaf coffee or tea you like and limit yourself to one or two caffeinated drinks a day. https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/foods-to-avoid/

Foods to avoid in pregnancy

Find out what food and drink you can have and what you should avoid or be careful with during pregnancy, such as some cheeses, meats, fish, eggs, nuts, caffeine and alcohol.

People have been drinking caffeine whilst pregnant for decades. I wouldn't suggest 6 double espressos a day is a great idea but it sounds like the amount you are having is pretty moderate

Cowlover89 · 27/08/2023 10:36

I drink 2 to 3 cups of tea a day

em3392 · 27/08/2023 11:32

If you're really concerned why not just get decaf coffee? Still has caffeine but only a tiny amount. Tastes the same - to me at least anyway.

1 or 2 cups a day is fine, they really refer to people who drink caffeine in excess.

PickledScrump · 27/08/2023 12:50

Coffee has 90-100mg of caffeine per cup, tea is around 50mg. Try to limit yourself to 200mg of caffeine per day from all sources. Things like coke, hot chocolate, chocolate bars will also contain caffeine

I probably go over the caffeine limit the amount of chocolate I eat 🙈

NHS:

You can have caffeine, but no more than 200mg per day. Regularly drinking more than this amount can increase your risk of pregnancy complications, such as low birthweight, and even miscarriage.
There is:

  • 100mg in a mug of instant coffee
  • 140mg in a mug of filter coffee
  • 75mg in a mug of tea (green tea can have the same amount of caffeine as regular tea)
  • 40mg in a can of cola
  • 80mg in a 250ml can of energy drink
  • less than 25mg in a 50g bar of plain dark chocolate
  • less than 10mg in a 50g bar of plain milk chocolate

@PosiePerkinPootleFlump yes and people used to drink alcohol and smoke whilst pregnant. It's important to follow the current advice rather than look at what people used to do. The OPs concerns are valid.

Read the book Expecting Better by Emily Oster, it has really helpful statical breakdowns of things advised for and against in pregnancy.

A small amount of caffeine is fine, one or two cups a day.

I accidentally drunk 6 shots of caffeinated espresso before my 7 week scan (IVF pregnancy) and my consultant wasn't worried, just said not to do it regularly.

You can google image a handy caffeine mg thing for different drinks.
