Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else had a bad reaction to Ferinject (iron infusion)?
I was 27 weeks pregnant when I was given my 1st dose. I fainted the next day and had severe extreme exhaustion and muscle tiredness. Doctors at the hospital said it was because of my low HB levels but I wasn't convinced. The next week I went back for my second dose and felt even worse the next day (dizziness, low blood pressure, muscle weakness etc), and was admitted to hospital for checks. Doctors kept saying it wasn't a reaction to ferinject and they did an abdominal scan as I was getting abdominal pain too (as well as extreme exhaustion and muscle tiredness). Eventually I insisted that they check my phosphate levels (I refused to leave without it done) as I had read that Ferinject can cause hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels). My phosphate levels have come back low and finally we know what is wrong - an adverse reaction to Ferinject!
When I've looked it up, there are so many studies showing this correlation, one as far as saying 51% of patients who received infusions of Ferinject (ferric carboxymaltose) developed low phosphate levels. I don't understand why we are not told this beforehand and more importantly why doctors don't seem aware of it (I saw at least 6 different doctors and mentioned it to them; and all of them said it wouldn't be that).
In fact it's even reported on the gov website! https://www.gov.uk/drug-safety-update/ferric-carboxymaltose-ferinject-risk-of-symptomatic-hypophosphataemia-leading-to-osteomalacia-and-fractures
