Yes mine both did they swallow the amniotic fluid . They were fine don’t worry. Grumpy teenagers now though…… but were lovely babies !

AuntieEsther · 24/08/2023 05:48

Why are you worried about this?

Mummy08m · 24/08/2023 05:51

This is normal isn't it? I never read that they were meant to stop after a certain gestation. My dd kept hiccuping - far more than 3 times a day, sometimes 3 times an hour- right to the birth. And carried on as a baby and toddler

Pollywoddles · 24/08/2023 05:57

Me, mine was a hiccuper! She was a hiccuppy baby too. She still gets them as a toddler but far more infrequently.

bluebirdsongs · 24/08/2023 06:05

DD hiccuped loads when I was pregnant with her and wasn't a hiccupy baby

whatamess100 · 24/08/2023 06:50

Silly question but how do you know the baby has hiccups?

Al991 · 24/08/2023 06:55

Don’t worry about it at all, it’s normal. The animal studies that raised concern over it have been disproved by human ones.

@whatamess100 it’s a rhythmic, jerky movement. You can tell it’s hiccups because the movements are easily spaced and aren’t caused by hands/feet so in a slightly different place :)

DuploTrain · 24/08/2023 06:57

Don’t worry. My DS hiccuped loads, right up until he was born. (And after he was born too).

The movements aren’t as big as kicks. And kicks are more variable - you might get little ones, and big ones.

With hiccups I used to feel and see my belly moving with little evenly spaced movements all of the same intensity that lasted a few minutes. Much more gentle than being kicked by a 38 week baby.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 24/08/2023 07:12

Yes my DD would do this, she's a teen now.

SweetAndSourChick3n · 24/08/2023 07:21

My first had hiccups multiple times a day up til birth. It's totally normal.

Vhuthu · 24/08/2023 08:06

Apparently hiccups are suppose to stop at 34 weeks or not occur everyday atleast. After 34 weeks it might be a sign that the baby has the umbilical cord around their neck or a knotted umbilical cord. Which can cause stillbirth or brain damage to the baby. I'm worried cause with mine it happens everyday and 2 to 3 times a day

Gosh I’m glad I never knew this because my dd had tonnes of hiccups right up until birth…and then after too, she was a really hiccupy baby.

If you are at all worried, go in and get checked. It’s not worth sitting at home stressing when you can get monitored.

I don’t think they’re meant to stop OP, I think if it’s there’s a sudden change/increase after 34 weeks it could be a cause for concern.

IHeartGeneHunt · 24/08/2023 08:39

Mine got hiccups every night when I had a bath. I used to lie there with the water looking like the cup of coffee in Jurassic Park when the T Rex was coming!
She still hiccups a lot now and she's 5.

Bleepbloopbluurp · 24/08/2023 08:40

Mine all hiccuped right the way through. Teenagers now and still hiccup unusually often!

TealDreams · 24/08/2023 09:18

I'm only 34 weeks but mine regularly gets hiccups, sometimes 3-4 times a day. Midwife isn't worried, it's normal. There was one study in sheep that showed a correlation between excessive hiccups and a cord issue, but no correlation has been seen in humans. If they've always hiccuped, don't worry.
I guess if your little one never got hiccups and suddenly started having them 3-4 times a day I'd see why you were worried, but not if it's normal for them X

rainbowMIT · 24/08/2023 09:38

My daughter hiccuped loads in the womb up until birth and then as a baby.

Pregnant now nearly 35 weeks with second and he's exactly the same hiccups a lot. It's something to do with them practice swallowing I think. Try not to worry my daughters a healthy 3 year old hiccups did her no harm x

lljkk · 24/08/2023 09:45

Cord around neck is very common, midwives are well trained to deal with it at birth. I am sure I read an account of a baby born in a hospital carpark recently, passerbys helped (woman in labour & her partner who was not medically trained), one hooked the cord around baby's head. it's not ideal but not one to worry about, either.

Knot in cord... I do know a family who had this tragedy. The only symptom was high fetal heartrate (sometimes).

My hiccupy baby just bought his first house. :-)

Nursemumma92 · 24/08/2023 10:50

If there hasn't been a massive increase and baby has been hiccuping like this for a while then this is normal and not a sign of distress. If baby has only just started hiccuping this much or for piece of mind, then speak to maternity triage for monitoring but both of mine hiccuped multiple times a day until I gave birth over due both times. No cord issues whatsoever.

BexyJames · 24/08/2023 10:53

Mine hiccuped a few times a day right until birth and the continued for a few days after being born! I'd say it's quite normal!

toddlermum27 · 24/08/2023 10:58

If you have any concerns get checked

livelaughlobotomy · 24/08/2023 10:59

My DD had hiccups loads during pregnancy, she's 4 months old now and perfectly healthy!

Timeforabiscuit · 24/08/2023 11:02

Any concerns, get it checked - youve noticed a change, its no bother to get it looked over by someone qualified.
