Help! Positive test 6 weeks after abortion

Hi I had a medical termination six weeks ago, I done a low sensitivity test 3 weeks after which was negative ( did it in the late afternoon with a dribble of urine ) I have had positive store bought tests since and today I done a clear blue digital which says pregnant 1-2, could this be a new pregnancy as I had unprotected intercourse a week after the abortion but used the POM and had the morning after pill five days later, so sorry for the TMI or could I just be left over HCG? Thanks

The MAP 5 days after intercourse is highly unlikely to prevent pregnancy - it works by stopping your ovulation but as sperm only live 4-5 days inside you 5 days later makes no difference. If you ovulated in the 5 days following your unprotected sex (which you could well have done, if you could the day of the medical termination as day 1 of your new cycle) then you could be pregnant.

However, you say your termination was 6 weeks ago, and if you ovulated in the following 14 days or so you'd expect a 2-3 or even 3+ indicator on the CB digital. Did you have sex at any other point in the last 6 weeks? It would be unusual for you to still have high enough HCG to register on a digital 6 weeks after a termination.

Thanks for your reply I had the termination on the 14th of July and unprotected intercourse on the 21st so If it was a new pregnancy I would be around 4 weeks now which would mean the 1-2 on the clear blue is correct?

The POM is not a method of contraception. It is a method of conception.

TheHappyCarrot · 23/08/2023 18:04

If you don't want a baby, please use contraception.

Basilthymerosemary · 23/08/2023 18:10

It's really not hard for both of you to use contraception!!! Be bloody responsible!!

Obviously it could be a new pregnancy. Regular unprotected sex can cause subsequent pregnancies.

I'm afraid that's not correct. The 1-2 weeks on a CB basically count the weeks since you conceived. So if you conceived at some point between 21-25 July it should be showing 3+ weeks.

Basically, if you conceived from sex on 21 July, the test should be registering higher. If you aren't actually pregnant from that, the test should long be negative by now. I'd suggest getting yourself to the EPU or calling your doctor as you may have had an incomplete miscarriage.

As other posters have said, please don't rely on POM for contraception, and if you do need to take MAP make sure you take it same day/following morning for it to be effective.
