Just to be safe I'd go to a spa for the day, have a fab meal, stay over and come back when dry......no idea on the paint though!!

I asked the chap in my local paint shop as I decorated the nursery this weekend and he said it's fine providing you ventilate well. Keep all windows open and you can use a mask if you are very concerned.

He did also mention you can get water based versions of most things too so if you didn't want to take any risks at all, as far as I know there isn't anything that "happens" from using paint but it is one of the unknown things and any research is based on women who worked as painters etc not in the case of a one off.

Oh and it is lead based paint which is dangerous but as far as I'm aware that hasn't been commonly used since the 70s!

I did quite a bit of decorating the month before dd3 was born - window open the whole time and used 'breatheasy' paint. Everything was fine - I even climbed ladders - although I'm not sure how wise that was

MissingMyHeels - if by use a mask, you mean one of the white ones they sell at B&Q - that won't prevent paint fumes - only dust particles.
You can get low odour paint now which is much less smelly
